i’ve read thousands of queries. genuinely good ones. from writers who can construct a sentence better than most people i know. and they still got rejected. here’s what i noticed: the writing is never the problem. the packaging is. querying is essentially a cold pitch to a stranger who has 47 other things open in their inbox. and no one teaches writers how to do that. they teach you to write beautifully (which you’ve done) but no one teaches you how to make it easy for the right person to say yes. that’s a completely different skill. and it’s learnable. the query letter, the comp titles, the hook, the positioning … none of that is your artistry. that’s your strategy. and the publishing industry hasn’t made it easy for writers to figure that bit out. i’m not here for that. follow along @jessica__berg — i’m a literary agent who is well aware the system is confusing, and my whole thing is making it less so for writers who are ready for traditional publishing.

I get this question all the time: What's my best advice for querying authors? Getting a form rejection and a full request on the exact same query/pages taught me one of the most important lessons of my entire career: what works for some people doesn't always work for everyone—and that's normal and okay! A single rejection doesn't mean you need to go back to the drawing board and try to tailor it to *every single possible reader*…you'd be editing forever if you took that approach. Getting a form request and a full rejection was so encouraging, because it taught me to focus on what *is* working, rather than what isn't. It can be tempting for writers to go back to the drawing board after every single rejection, but in my experience, it's wise to wait until you notice a pattern in the feedback—a lot of people passing, especially if they're passing for similar reasons. This lesson also reminded me that literary agents are—shocker!—just like all other readers: they have specific tastes/preferences, and they have good days and bad days that might influence how a query/pages hit at any given moment. Good luck to anyone who's in/about to enter the querying trenches! 💗

I can 100% trace my inbox obsession all the way back to when I was querying agents. 15 YEARS AGO, oh my god no wonder I can’t shake it. Anyway, it didn’t get better when my book went out on submission to publishers. And it’s a habit of refreshing every five seconds that has unfortunately continued to stick with me all these years later. One thing I love about my job is that there are always surprises. Emails can bring joy and heartbreak and unexpected opportunities. More often than not these days I’m not really “waiting” on any news. And yet! AND YET. I still find myself refreshing because…you never know! Honestly though, it’s become a deeply ingrained habit that I’m not thrilled with, but can’t quite bring myself to break. Please tell me this isn’t JUST ME. I’m so chill don’t you love that about me?
