SHWhen people pass by my house, they often think they can hear me outside… so they stop to say hi. The big joke is that it’s not me at all—it’s my raven Zia, who has mastered my Ohio-accented Farsi a little too well. Here he is casually dropping “hi Zia,” “salam,” and “chetori”. When I spend time with them, I speak Farsi, an apparently these are the words that they hear me say th most 🥲
Ravens are famously gifted mimics; in the wild they’ve been known to imitate other birds, dripping water, door creaks, dogs barking, and even full human phrases. Their syrinx—their vocal organ—is so complex that they can bend and layer sound the way we shape vowels.
Every morning, I wake up to the sound of my own voice drifting up through my bedroom window—Zia chatting away before I’ve even had coffee. Living with a raven who sounds exactly like me is surreal, hilarious, and honestly one of the greatest joys of my life.
