Did you know Eastern (Red-Spotted) Newts can live for 12-15 years? These little salamanders only grow to be 3-5 inches as adults, and are just 1-3 inches as juveniles (otherwise known as Red Efts). Larvae live in water and use external gills to breathe, but transform into juvenile efts, which migrate to terrestrial habitats and develop lungs to breathe the air. The red eft is one of our most recognized salamanders, and may spend several years on land before returning to breeding ponds where they transform into aquatic adults. Efts appear bright orange-red in color, but take on an overall greenish color as they mature to adults. This bright coloration serves as a warning that this animal has toxic skin secretions, making them unpalatable to many predators. You can spot red efts after heavy rains in the spring and in the late summer to autumn when the ground is moist, and can see adults from spring through fall and sometimes even into the winter, as they will feed under ice. This incredible salamander is one of the most beautiful animals I've ever encountered in my life - meet the Red salamander (Pseudotriton ruber)! These uncommonly encountered plethodontid salamanders are denizens of small streams, seeps, and other ephemeral water sources throughout the Southeastern US, where they spend most of their lives hidden beneath logs, mud, or leaf litter. Their brilliant red coloration, first thought to be Batesian mimicry of the red eft (Notopthalmus viridescens), is now known to be Mullerian mimicry - because red salamanders are also toxic! While the pseudotritontoxins that they secrete are not as potent as the poisons of many other amphibians, this is definitely a gunmy lizard that you don't want to taste test - even if they do look like a peice of candy. Full video featuring this species in the latest episode of The Wild Report YouTube! ~ ~ "How many are your works, Lord? In wisdom you made them all, the earth is full of your creatures." Eastern newts (Notophthalmus viridescens) are Vermont’s only native newt. Born in water, they spend years on the forest floor before returning to the water as adults. ▫️ Tri-phasic life cycle • Aquatic larva – hatches in the spring, breathes with external gills. • Red eft – a vivid orange terrestrial juvenile that roams forest floors for 2–7 years, absorbing its gills and developing lungs. You’ll find them wandering after rain or under logs and rocks, anywhere cool, damp, and shady. • Aquatic adult – returns to permanent water, olive-green with red-rimmed dorsal spots and a laterally compressed tail for efficient swimming. ▫️ Albino newt Extremely rare and lack the dark pigments seen in typical individuals. Their skin appears pale yellow, cream, or nearly white, with pink or red eyes from visible blood vessels. Without natural camouflage, they’re much more vulnerable to predators and sunlight. Spotting one in the wild is extraordinary. ▫️ Ecological value Newts regulate mosquito larvae and other invertebrates, while serving as bio-indicators: a thriving population signals clean, well-oxygenated wetlands. ▫️ Skin toxin Their skin secretes potent tetrodotoxin, deterring most predators yet requiring pristine water; primarily a defense mechanism against predators and is not intended to harm humans through hand contact, just don’t rub your eyes or put your hands in your mouth. ▫️ Ethical handling Never use dry or bare hands. Instead, wet your hands with pond water or scoop some muddy substrate—whatever they were resting in. This protects their delicate, absorptive skin from harm. Observe, admire, protect and keep ponds chemical-free #newt #wildlife #vermont #aquaticlife

Poisonous ☠️☠️☠️ The juvenile phase (eft) of the Eastern Newt is poisonous if ingested. I find these often in the Adirondacks. No wonder they are so brightly colored. I also learned they can live 12-15 years. In their adult stage they are overall greenish in color with a row of several black-bordered red-orange spots on each side of their back. They help keep mosquito populations down by eating their larvae. Thankfully Mr. Pink and the rest of my pack want nothing to do with these. #redeft #newt #eft #dogsthatexplore #chihuahua #dogsofinstagram

After a long two to three year journey the red eft eastern newt settles down in a new pond. An interstellar traveler floating among the stars…✨(16mm) “Eastern newts have a lifespan of about 8–10 years in the wild, but some individuals have been known to live up to 15 years…An eastern newt’s time to get from larva to eft is about three months. During this stage, the eft may travel far, acting as a dispersal stage from one pond to another, ensuring outcrossing in the population…After two or three years, the eft finds a pond and transforms into the aquatic adult. The adult’s skin is a dull olive green dorsally, with a dull yellow belly, but retains the eft’s characteristic black-rimmed red spots.” -Wikipedia The yellow flowers in the pond are bladderwort, an aquatic carnivorous plant that “can feed on more substantial prey such as water fleas (Daphnia), nematodes and even fish fry, mosquito larvae and young tadpoles. Despite their small size, the traps are extremely sophisticated. In the active traps of the aquatic species, prey brush against trigger hairs connected to the trapdoor. The bladder, when “set”, is under negative pressure in relation to its environment so that when the trapdoor is mechanically triggered, the prey, along with the water surrounding it, is sucked into the bladder. Once the bladder is full of water, the door closes again, the whole process taking only ten to fifteen milliseconds.” -Wikipedia Filmed on Kodak Ektachrome 16mm film with an Arriflex 16SR camera.
