A 488 nm cyan laser pointer is refracted through an optical element with lumpy surface features which create this aurora/nebula effect. Every time light enters a new medium, it changes direction — this is called refraction. How much it bends depends on the refractive indices of the two media involved. In this experiment, light coming from the coloured parts of the flower is refracted twice: first when it passes from the plastic bag into the water, and again when it travels from the water back into the air. As a result, the refracted light no longer reaches our eyes when we look from above the beaker, so the colours appear to disappear. Why doesn’t the black outline vanish as well? The black outline is drawn on the outside of the bag and absorbs almost all incident light, reflecting very little. Since there is almost no reflected light to be redirected by refraction, the black outline remains visible. #science #stem #stemeducationforkids #physics #physicsstudent

The glass itself is dichroic, originally developed by NASA to protect astronaut’s vision in space. This dichroic glass is tricolor, reflecting one color, refracting a second, and transmitting a third – the dynamic projection of colored light onto the wall and into the instrument form key design features of the Fazioli. The shape of a rainbow is actually a full circle, but we usually only see a half-circle due to the horizon blocking our view of the other half. Rainbows can also appear as double rainbows, with a fainter and wider second rainbow outside the first one, due to a secondary reflection of light within the water droplets. Interestingly, rainbows can also be observed in non-rainy conditions, such as around waterfalls, fountains, or even sprinklers. Fractures heal, tears have to be sutured, refracted tendons need to be clamped...it is important to go to the right doctor at the right time. We were told that he would be fine in one day.. and we didnt believe it could be possible.. but thanks to the medical facilities and post-op care of Dr.Gautam Tawari and his team from @nanavatihospital hubby's surgery went well.. and now in recuperation.
