CHThis failed windshield repair likely happened for a couple reasons:
1) Weak, water-thin resins that weren’t strong enough for the job. This is the case with most resins, including many that are labeled “professional.” Most max out at 79% the strength of new glass.
2) Incorrectly stopping the damage. Some shops will just drill through the first layer of glass and sometimes will drill big “relief holes” to try and stop the spread.
To do this correctly:
1) you need resins that will be 100%+ the strength of new glass after curing. Longer cracks require a very strong, very thick resin. These are not the same as rock chip resins.
2) you need more than a “relief hole.” You need to stop the crack from spreading by drilling partially through the glass (not all the way) and tapping a bullseye.
