How to Calculate Resistance Using the Colour Code
Most common resistors have 4 color bands:
Band 1 → First digit
Band 2 → Second digit
Band 3 → Multiplier
Band 4 → Tolerance
Color Number Chart:
Black = 0
Brown = 1
Red = 2
Orange = 3
Yellow = 4
Green = 5
Blue = 6
Violet = 7
Grey = 8
White = 9
Multiplier = 10^digit
Gold = ×0.1 (±5% tolerance)
Silver = ×0.01 (±10% tolerance)
Example 🔍
Red – Violet – Brown – Gold
Red = 2
Violet = 7
Brown = ×10
So:
27 × 10 = 270 Ω
Gold → ±5% tolerance
