OURoaching mules is a long standing tradition in the packing world. Since Shoal Creek Outfitters began in the 90’s, we have been roaching mules, which is the term used when they shave off the mane and about 6 inches of the tail.
Each of our mules gets this new hair cut before they start working, and the simple reason is because it looks better!
In the old days, if someone took pride in their mule, they would roach them. Cosmetically, it just looks cleaner. The reason is because mules are part horse and part donkey. So their manes will grow out and stand up awkwardly because of the thickness. It never seems to lay down like a horses, and will grow out to look like a bad Mohawk.
Our mules are the backbone of this outfit, and we take pride in the hard work they put in for us. So, we make sure they look sharp down the trail, because as smart as these animals are, we’d like to think they notice when they look better, and they feel better!
