Student Spotlight 🔦 Bibek Gupta, PhD ’27, computer engineering, is developing morphing-wing robots at the Silicon Synapse Lab. From building bat-inspired systems from scratch, he’s mastered the modeling, control, and deployment skills needed to create robots that solve real-world problems—expertise he’ll bring to industry after graduation. Gupta’s current research focuses on understanding and controlling aerial systems, specifically robots that can change their physical configuration while in flight. In particular, Gupta’s project involves building and deploying a bat-like ariel robot with wings that can change shape mid-flight. For the robot to successfully adjust its wing configuration while flying, it needs to accurately predict and respond to aerodynamic forces—the push and pull of air against its body. Gupta works on the modeling and controls systems that make this possible. He designs algorithms that account for these forces in real time, ensuring the robot can hover steadily and fly reliably as its wings morph. He recently presented his research at the 2025 International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems in Hangzhou, where he introduced new approaches for estimating aerodynamic forces on flapping aerial robots, including physics-based momentum modeling and data-driven learning methods. Friday feeling… but make it engineering innovation 🤖 HNC Electrical Engineering and HNC Manufacturing students at Cheshire College - South & West have been set a unique challenge — using FANUC collaborative robots to pop the top off a bottle of champagne 🍾 From concept to creation, students have designed their own fixtures and end effectors using CAD, before bringing them to life through 3D printing and laser cutting. It has been great to see the variety of approaches — each student tackling the challenge in their own way, applying creativity, engineering knowledge, and problem-solving skills to achieve the goal 💡

Project Spotlight: Mason’s Hydraulic Scissor Lift! 🛠️ Engineering is all about trial and error. Mason takes us through the different iterations it took to get his hydraulic lift moving perfectly. Success doesn’t always happen on version 1.0, and that’s the best part of building! Drop an emoji in the comments to show Mason some love for his hard work!

Projects from Herwig Baumgartner’s (@baumgartner_architecture) Fall 2025 Applied Studies course Architecture Against Climate Change: SUPERSKINS - Robotic 3D Printed Ceramic Envelopes with AT Kai Mikel Johnson (@kaimikelson). This year’s Robotic Fabrication elective explores how architecture can respond to fire-prone environments through material innovation and advanced digital workflows. Set in Altadena — a community recently impacted by wildfires — students developed design proposals for new ADUs and prototyped ceramic wall systems that perform as resilient envelopes and expressive architectural skins. The semester began with research and form exploration, building AI-generated terrain studies in Grasshopper and translating them into tectonic strategies and performative surface patterns. These ideas evolved into hands-on material experiments using multiple robots and 3d printed ceramics as the basis for a new “Super Skin” focused on fire-resistance, durability, and sculptural potential for a fire resilient building enclosure prototype. Students combined robotic fabrication with digital craft: clay 3D printing, CNC routing, glazing, kiln firing, and robotic workflows. The result is a series of high-resolution ceramic prototypes- technically rigorous, materially inventive, and visually distinctive. The final deliverables include a full-scale ceramic mock up and short films documenting each team’s research, design process, and fabrication journey—reimagining ceramics as a future-ready architectural technology.
