Have you seen such squints? I first came across the concept of nave altar rood screen squints in Eamon Duffy’s extraordinary book “The Stripping of the Altars”, which I highly recommend to anyone interested in the medieval church and/or the Reformation in England. However, even though it has been many years since I first read that book, a couple weeks ago was the first time that I had actually seen some nave altar rood screen squints. Well I think I’d seen a few holes in rood screens before, but nothing on the level of ornate craftsmenship and uniformity as is observed here at Hawton in Nottinghamshire. Now this theory is debated, with some suggesting that this was not the intended purpose of such holes. However, I certainly buy into this theory for the manner in which it fits into the broader religious practice of late medieval catholicism in England. Now the matter of the those tan lines on the rood screen. I have no hard evidence that they were actually created by the presence of nave altars. However, it seems the most likely explanation to me. Although, as always, I would be most interested in hearing if anyone else had any other ideas.

A remarkable piece of medieval masonry! I can already tell what everyone wants to know: where are the other two? And the answers quite interesting. One of the others is located in the church in the neighbouring village of Stebbing. And the third one is at Trondheim in Cathedral in Norway. However, this is disputed, with there being stone screens, although rather different in their style, at the churches down in Totnes and Westwell. Additionally, many cathedrals have stone screens between the nave and the quire, but those often are called Pulpitums because they are formally rather different. Something else I can hear people saying is that I got the names mixed up. I said label stone and drip stop, when it’s actually label stop and drip stone! Easy mistake to make, I think. Finally, I should say that the story about the angels and demons on the rood screen is merely a local legend, but an intriguing one, and something I’ve heard before about carvings in other churches! Although here, the story doesn’t really align with the fact that the money for the screen came from the Earl of March, however, perhaps the money was given to the priest to pay for the work and he was being a bit tight fisted! The 15th century interior of an English medieval church... During the Reformation in Britain, rood screens (partitions separating the nave and chancel of a church) were largely destroyed or defaced due to Protestant reformers’ opposition to the veneration of saints and the visual barrier they represented. Rood screens symbolised the separation between clergy and laity. The rood screen and loft were lost from this Warwickshire church, but many survived the Reformation and still exist largely in East Anglia and the South West. #History #medieval #architecture

Have you ever seen stairs like these in a church? Most rood stairs are different to these ones at Hodgeston. Normally, the rood stairs are simply a small spiral staircases built into the wall adjacent to the chancel arch. These stairs would have led to the rood loft, which was a gallery over the rood screen. The purpose of rood lofts is debated. They may well have just existed to give access to light the candles before the rood, however, some argue that it was probably used for singing or delivering spoken word. There are only 24 surviving rood lofts in Britain. Some of the most impressive can be seen at St Ellyw’s, Llanelieu, Powys; St Mary’s, Derwen, Denbighshire; and St Anno’s, Llananno, Powys. All three of these churches are cared for by the Friends of Friendless Churches. The featured 20th century rood is inside St Eloi’s, Llandeloy in Pembrokeshire (another FoFC church), which I visit later during my Pembrokeshire Pilgrimage. #medievalhistory #medieval #medievalchurch #historicchurch

❓What do you think? ✨ Before: The sanctuary after the 1962 reordering, with a new bishop’s throne in place of the original high altar. A new forward altar was placed at the crossing. The end wall with its rose window was painted bright red. ✨ After: The sanctuary in its current design was reordered in 1993. This major overhaul and redecoration, including reinstating some of the colour and richness that had been lost, took place under Bishop McGuinness to mark the 150th anniversary of the church. 💬 Comment YES if you would like to see even earlier photos of the Sanctuary in all its Pugin splendour. ⬇️ Scroll down for more detail on the 1962 reordering. The altar rails, Pugin’s sedilia, his traceried screen behind the high altar and the oak cathedra were all removed, and the high altar introduced by Bishop Dunn replaced with a new Portland stone forward altar, placed on a white marble extension to the sanctuary under the tower with modern rails on three sides. The rood beam and the figures of Our Lady and St John on either side of the suspended crucifix were removed and a new cathedra installed in the position previously occupied by the high altar. The timber screens at the entrances to the ambulatories and eastern chapels and the remains of Pugin’s rood screen at the west end of the nave were removed. Travertine flooring was laid in the nave and mahogany benches replaced the original pitch pine pews (some of which were re-used at St Hugh’s, Bilborough). The lighting was renewed (with the Stations of the Cross provided with ‘feature’ lighting) and the interior redecorated in lighter colours. The walls of the nave, sanctuary and ambulatories were painted white and the three eastern chapels and the transepts eggshell jasmine. The main ceilings were painted blue with the timbers picked out in white; the aisle roofs white with the timbers in black. The east wall was painted tomato red; the stone arches, piers and columns stone colour. Only the Blessed Sacrament Chapel was left with its existing decorative paintwork. Anne Boleyn is NOT Forgotten Here…Despite Henry VIII’s Best Efforts to Erase Her Memory! 😳👇 This is another reel from King’s College Chapel, Cambridge. Although King’s College and its chapel were founded by Henry VI in the mid-fifteenth century, it was Henry VII and Henry VIII who completed the building between 1485 and the mid-1530s. One of the final parts to be added to the chapel’s interior was this fine Renaissance rood screen, installed when King Henry VIII was still married to Anne Boleyn. It celebrates their union with their intertwined initials. When Anne and the Boleyn faction were destroyed in 1536, concerted efforts were made to erase such initials from Henry’s palaces. Only rare examples survive…including this one, not in the King’s palace but in the chapel he helped complete. Have you seen it?
