There is so much packed into our phonics lessons. Fluency. Word work. Decodable text. And then… sentence encoding. If I’m being honest, that was the piece that kept getting skipped in my room. Not because it isn’t important, but because it felt messy. Whiteboards everywhere. Erasing. No real accountability. Once I gave my students a dedicated space to write, everything changed. Now they: ✔️ Encode the sentence ✔️ Have picture support ✔️ Get handwriting practice ✔️ Stay engaged (because yes… they can color after) And the BEST part? I’m not skipping it anymore. When it comes to applying phonics knowledge to print, things can slow down a bit. We watch as students begin practicing the code and often, it is slow and labored. BUT... the truth is, this application piece is critical. The productive struggle is what we want. The productive struggle is what helps build fluency and automaticity. ✅ These blending lines ensure that students have ample practice. You will find three levels for each phonics skill. How to use: 1. You may laminate each page for future use or simply print one sheet out per student. 2.Read through the blending lines once choral reading. Show students how to track from left to right sounding out the words as they go. 3. Then, ask students to practice reading several times independently or with a partner. Students can color one star each time they read the sheet all the way through. If you are ready to snag these blending lines for your kiddos, drop the word “STAR” below. #literacymatters #phonics #iteachfirst #iteachsecond #scienceofreading
