MAThere are three main things you need to know about saturated fat.
1. Saturated fat is not healthy. Saturated fat raises LDL blood cholesterol which is a risk factor for heart disease.
2. You don’t need to eat saturated fat. There is no dietary requirement for it.
3. The replacement strategy matters. To lower LDL cholesterol and heart disease risk, replace foods high in saturated fat with foods high in mono unsaturated or polyunsaturated fat or a healthy less processed whole grain food.
If you replace foods in your diet that are high in saturated fat with foods high in sugar or refined grains this will not lower LDL cholesterol or heart disease risk. This is because our bodies make saturated fat. And, a diet higher in simple sugars and refined grains is a great way to ramp up saturated fat production in your body.
This is also why when people were told to go on a low-fat diet from the 1970s through the 1990s they didn’t necessarily experience a decrease in cholesterol or heart disease risk. I call this the SnackWell’s effect. Instead of eating higher fat foods they replaced these foods with SnackWells and similar dessert foods. And their cholesterol didn’t budge.
Some people who don’t understand nutrition science very well started saying that saturated fats were OK and carbohydrates were the problem. It’s not carbohydrates in general but instead the replacement strategy. If you take food high in saturated fat out of your diet, replace it with healthy whole-grain foods or foods higher in mono and poly unsaturated fat.
In my next post I’ll go into saturated fat and a little bit more detail.
