The brown scapular is one of the most beloved Marian devotionals in the history of the Church. But what is it? Where did it come from? Any Catholic can wear the scapular—even children! It is important to remember that the scapular is not a “magic amulet.” We cannot wear it, live a sinful life, and expect to be saved from hell. The scapular is not necessary for salvation. But it is a powerful sacramental, and a truly amazing gift from the Blessed Mother. When worn in faith, the scapular is a devotion which leads us to holiness and protects us from eternal damnation. If you haven’t embraced the scapular and its promises, you should!

As someone who benefits tremendously from tangible aids in prayer, wearing a scapular is so comforting. I have found this devotion to be an original “liturgical style”—donning a piece of fabric for the sake of orienting a heart towards worship. In my moments of anxiety, it’s so simple to just hold onto the little piece of wool as a reminder of the Good Shepherd and the consolation of His Mother. To be clothed in the brown scapular is to constantly call to mind the nearness of Our Lady—and where she is the Holy Spirit comes to dwell (Annunciation/Pentecost) and there Christ is made present again. Wool often signifies in Scripture protection & anointing (as the oils used to coat and preserve the wool reminds us of the Holy Spirit covering us) as in Psalm 23. The scapular is a simple devotion that transforms the ordinary & draws us into contemplation.

Give it a try! 👍🏼 Start in a plank position, allow the chest to drop towards the ground and slowly push up and allow the upper back to round up. 👏🏻 It can be a bit difficult at first, but don’t be discouraged; it takes time to learn to engage different muscles that we don’t use very often. The brown scapular is a popular sacramental in the church, and widely recognizable as the mini-habit with two, brown fabric squares on one’s front and back. A brief history: in 1251 Our Lady appeared to St. Simon Stock, a Carmelite. She handed him a brown woolen scapular and said, “This shall be a privilege for you and all Carmelites, that anyone dying in this habit shall not suffer eternal fire.” Is it a “get out of hell free” garment? No, you must do your best to live a virtuous life, and follow the rules of the scapular to receive its promises (and one of them is frequently very much ignored). First of all, you must be *enrolled* in the scapular. You cannot simply put on on your person and call it good. The enrollment process, thankfully, is rather simple. You must also wear a 100% wool, brown scapular. **No other colors or materials will suffice.** Finally, you must wear it constantly… this is where people mess up. “Can I take it off to bathe?” Of course! “Can I take it off for a wedding, so I don’t ruin the pictures?” No. “Oh, well, my sister just moved it down to around her waist the last time she was a bridesmaid, and she wore it under her dress. I think I’ll do that.” You’re free to do so, but - like your sister - you will no longer be enrolled. From St. Theresa Parish: “In order to receive the promise, the Scapular must always be worn. We must understand that by wearing the Scapular we show our consecration and devotion to the Blessed Virgin. Our Blessed Mother cannot be pleased in any one who out of vanity or fear takes it off whenever it is not convenient to wear it. By wearing it we make an open profession of our faith, confidence, and love of Her.” There you have it. The number of Catholics I’ve had to argue this point with is… shocking, to say the least. Don’t be prideful about your enrollment. If you take it off for an unsatisfactory reason, just reenroll. #catholic #brownscapular #sacramental #scapular
