MILet’s talk ATNR🧠🚼
The ATNR reflex emerges at birth and integrates around 4-6 mo. It helps with early motor development, eye coordination and rolling.
*If you’re having difficulty remembering this reflex, think”ATNR= Arm Turns, Neck Rotates”💡 it kind of looks like a fencer position too🤺
A child may display these difficulties if retained:
•bilateral coordination
•crossing midline
•handwriting
•fine motor tasks
•reading
•posture
⭐️How to test:
•have the child quadruped, gently turn their head to one side…if they lose their balance or the arm on the face side extends out/elbow bends, it’s positive ➕
⭐️OT Interventions:
•animal walks
•quadruped weight bearing activities encouraging head rotation
•crossing midline activities
•prone activities over a yoga/peanut ball such as putting a puzzle together, lacing beads, etc.

YOIt’s all fun and games (literally) until it’s time to transition back to their classroom after occupational therapy💔
I mean… I get it! My room is FILLED with sensory rich equipment and environments, including sensory bins and tunnels, and a trampoline and an exercise ball and a spinning chair, squishy toys, bubbles, blocks & puzzles, YOU NAME IT.
🌟 And around here? We are child-led, so the therapy room is often a child’s favorite place to be (but we definitely have our hard moments and days!!)
But working in a school and watching this happen all day, has got me thinking… how can we make the classroom environments more child-led and sensory/movement rich and motivating for these students?? 🤔

MIWhen you pull out the Theraputty, it’s not just “playdough time”—it’s a high-level workout for the intricate systems required for handwriting.
From an OT perspective, practicing writing strokes in putty is a game-changer for several reasons:
Proprioceptive Feedback: Dragging a finger or a stylus through resistive putty provides massive sensory input to the joints. This “heavy work” helps a child’s brain “feel” where their hand is in space, making the muscle memory for strokes stick faster.
Intrinsic Muscle Strengthening: Fighting the resistance of the putty builds the tiny muscles of the hand (the “intrinsics”) that are responsible for the “tripod grip.” Stronger hands mean less fatigue during long writing tasks.
Graduation of Force: It teaches kids how to modulate pressure. If they can control a stroke through resistive putty, they develop a more refined touch when translating that to a pencil on paper.
Multi-Sensory Mapping: By moving from 3D resistance to 2D paper, we are bridging the gap between motor planning and execution.

OTTransitions ⏱️
They can be tough for some friends. Here are some strategies you can utilize:
⏱️ Provide a timer. 5 minutes, 2 minutes, the 1 minute is my usual go to.
👁️ Visuals. But show them this giving a heads up so they can mentally prepare for the transition.
🤸 Keep the momentum going! Having fun to not having fun can feel like a huge stop in their tracks. See if they will do bear walks, crab walks, or frog jumps out the door to support the transition! 🐸
😌 Transition to an activity that is more calming, as being on a swing can be alerting and can cause overstimulation. Consider seeing if the student will switch to wall push ups, helping you carry a heavy stack of books back to class/a room, using a steamroller if available, getting “ball squeezes” etc.
And sometimes, if I’m being honest, it just ain’t gonna work out the way you want. You just gotta ride it out. And then go to the drawing board and try different strategies next time. 😅
