How to make your own shirred top this summer! A couple notes: - I highly recommend starting with fabric that already has lines or a grid — it makes the shirring way easier to just follow existing lines! You can also use solids, you’ll just need to draw guide lines with a disappearing pen first, which adds an extra step but I’ve done this too & it turned out! - The angle of your shoulder should be fairly shallow otherwise the neckline will ride up too high like a turtle neck - You may want to add an inch to your desired length since you’ll lose some length to hemming (I always account for this in my measurements which is why I forgot to mention it!) If your shirring elastic never gathers properly, this usually fixes it. Use standard thread on the top of your machine and shirring elastic in the bobbin. Hand-wind the elastic onto the bobbin, making sure not to pull it tight. Set your stitch length to around 4 and sew your rows without backstitching. Save this for the next time you want to add shirring to your project 🤍 #sewing #sewingtutorial #beginnersewing #sewingcommunity #shirring

✨DIY til smocksyning ✨ Se mine top 3 tips nederst i teksten - og gem reelen til næste gang, du skal sy smock✌🏼 Smock giver en så SMUK rynket effekt, og det er en ret fin måde at gøre fastvævet stof elastisk, så der kommer mere fleksibilitet 🪡 Det gør man ved at sy med elastiktråd i underspolen og almindeligt sytråd i overtråden (det er vigtigt, at man bruger elastiktråd, som er beregnet til symaskiner) Jeg tråder underspolen jævnt i hånden, jeg strammer ikke til, men det skal heller ikke være løst! Jeg syede med en stinglængde på 4, men prøv et sted mellem 3-4,5. Min trådspænding var på 6, som er lidt højere end normalt, men det varierer alt efter symaskinen, så prøv et sted mellem 5-8 😅 Regn med at stoffet trækker sig en del sammen, så gang dit bredeste punkt (ofte brystmålet) med minimum 1,5. Jeg vil nok x2 næste gang, jeg syer en lignede kjole. 🪡 Mine 3 bedste tips til en bedre smock-syproces: 1. Optegn dine sylinjer inden du syer! Det er svært at gøre løbende, fordi stoffet rynker så meget. Her er det mega smart at bruge ternet stof, hvis du vil spare det her step 😎 2. Tråd spoler på forhånd 👏🏼 På den måde kan du hurtigt skifte ud, når du løber tør, men sørg for at elastikken ikke løsner sig for meget. Jeg tror, jeg brugte omkring 6 underspoler, som var en hel rulle elastiktråd, men jeg testede også en del først. 3. Undgå at hæfte for hver afsluttet linje, men fortsæt din smock for et bedre sy-flow! Du kan enten sy lidt ned langs kanten af stoffet, dreje stoffet og sy videre på næste linje. Eller du kan løfte nålen og trække lidt i dine tråde og dit stof, så der kommer en løkke i kanten - så drejer du stoffet og flytter din nål til næste sylinje. ✌🏼 Kan I bruge mine tips? 🪡 #sysysy #shirring #smock #diy #shirreddress #smockkjole #deadstock

Shirring is a beautiful technique which is perfect for your spring and summer makes. ☀️🌸 With a little practice and the right settings, it adds a lovely detail to your sewing projects. Here are my top tips for shirring: 1. Practice on a scrap of fabric first 2. Wind your elastic onto your bobbin by hand - test what the shirring looks like with and without tension when you are winding it 3. Increase your stitch length (I set mine to 3.5) 4. Back tack at the start and end of each row 5. Mark shirring lines using an erasable fabric pen or use the side of your presser foot for guidance 6. Once all rows are sewn, carefully steam the shirring by hovering a steamy iron above the fabric (not on it) to help the gathers settle Save this for later and let me know if you have any extra shirring tips in the comments 💬👇 #SewingTips #Shirring #DIYFashion #SewingTechniques #HandmadeWardrobe #LoveSewing #Dressmaking

Cutting the elastic thread after every line weakens the edges over time… and that’s when the fit starts falling apart. Instead don’t cut the thread. When you reach the end, turn your fabric go slightly down and continue the next line so it becomes one continuous thread. This one change keeps the shirring tight, secure, and long lasting even after multiple wears and washes. If you care about how your garments actually hold up, this matters. Save this before your next sewing project. . #sewingtips #shirring #sewinghack #dressmaking #fashiondesign
