Most people taking vitamin C every day are still deficient — and it comes down to how they're taking it. The target for an average adult is 8 grams per day. But standard vitamin C (ascorbic acid or sodium ascorbate) caps out at around 300–400mg of absorption before your gut simply can't take any more. The rest causes diarrhea and is wasted. If my baby tested positive for pertussis (whooping cough), this is exactly what I’d do — as a holistic PA-C and mom of 2. Save this, you might need it! First — pertussis is a toxin-mediated illness. The bacteria release toxins that paralyze airway cilia, thicken mucus, and block immune cells, which is why the coughing fits can be so intense and long-lasting. This is where Vitamin C (sodium ascorbate) matters. Dr. Suzanne Humphries, MD published a detailed protocol using frequent, high dose oral sodium ascorbate based on decades of research and real-world use in infants and children. Vitamin C helps neutralize toxins, thin mucus, fuel immune cells, and reduce cough severity. The protocol uses frequent, weight-based dosing of sodium ascorbate (200–375 mg/kg/day, divided into many small doses over 24 hrs). During peak coughing, higher amounts may be needed. Dosing is adjusted by bowel tolerance and symptom response. Continue for many weeks, don’t stop too soon or cough will return worse, and taper slowly as the cough improves. Dosing and monitoring should ideally be done in combination with an integrative practitioner. Antibiotics for pertussis are most helpful before the cough begins. Once coughing fits are established, it’s been shown in studies they don’t reliably reduce severity or duration. Their primary role later in illness is reducing contagiousness, not improving symptoms for the child. In very young infants, or if exposure is known before cough starts, antibiotics may still be helpful. Once the cough is full-blown, supportive care becomes the mainstay. test EARLY especially if known/possible exposure!! If my baby tested positive, I’d also focus on: Frequent breastfeeding Skin to skin + upright positioning - Upright helps keep mucus moving. Calm, low-stimulation environment Humidity + gentle airway support • Cool-mist humidifier • Saline drops/spray if congested • Gentle suction only when needed Normal saline neb can help thin mucus Avoid cough suppressants Close monitoring Watch breathing, color, feeding, wet diapers, and energy.
