JAI've seen plenty of Florida softshells (Apalone ferox), but all besides this one were large adults. This tiny little turtle couldn't have been older than a year or two, and was attempting to cross a busy highway. So, it was moved to the nearest body of water in the direction it originally was heading.
Florida softshells go through a more extreme ontogenetic shift than the other two North American softshells. They hatch out with an overall dark color, bright yellow facial stripes, and strongly defined ocelli on the carapace. As they age they gradually lose all of these features, with great individual variation I must add.
Even at this size, their musk is nearly unbearable. In my opinion, softshell musk is FAR worse than that of Snapping turtles and Musk turtles. I got some of it on my finger that day, forgot about it, and then when I went to eat I got it in my mouth. Nasty. If I was a predator, I'd stay the hell away from softshell turtles.

AMAlbino Chinese softshells and hets!!! This project was a long time coming and these babies were produced from a visual Albino male that we raised from a hatchling and a Het Female. It’s nice to see it pan out and we were blessed with 6 albinos and 5 hets!!! My partner spent countless hours doing everything in his power to replicate there natural environment and diet, can’t thank him enough. The hets are insanely nice as well. All are set up and have been feeding on blood worms, pellets and krill. Don’t miss these guys!!!

P.S. These tubs aren’t dirty they are cycled!!! Algae can be important in raising baby turtles helping to keep there water clean!!!

I’m wearing the lighter weight of the softshells, but the new Aeron softshells comes in three (3) variants. Regular (this one), All Winter, and Deep Winter. With each helping to stay warm in progressively colder and colder weather, all the way down to -2 degrees C (28 degrees F).
