COShakespeare’s Sonnet 30 is about memory, loss and regret. The speaker ‘summon[s] up remembrance of things past’, thinking on past grievances, friendships, and lost loves. “Then I can drown an eye”, he writes, “unused to flow”. It is the memories of his friends, however, and in particular the ‘fair youth’ (which is the subject of many of Shakespeare’s sonnets) that provides him comfort:

I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought,
And with old woes new wail my dear time’s waste:

ALFor models that you’re used to, like Claude 3.5 Sonnet (in Claude) and GPT-4o (in ChatGPT), you need to provide the AI system with context. Who are you? What do you do for a living? What are your goals? What are your restrictions? Do you have example outputs that might help? How would you teach this to a teammate? What is a key insight to build on? Is there a supporting document that could be helpful to add?
For models like o1-preview (in ChatGPT), which are strong in reasoning, it’s actually the opposite — give the AI space to “think” and don’t overprescribe what it should or shouldn’t do. It might even be able to plan out it’s reasoning process better than you can prompt it to.
Either way, you know what I always say: test, test, and test again.
