Every third Wednesday, the skies above Thumba in Trivandrum light up with a rocket launch – and no, it’s not a drill. It’s the RH-200 sounding rocket taking off from VSSC, something that’s been happening since 1963! Around 11:45 AM, you’ll hear that iconic roar as science literally takes flight. This mini launch is all about studying the atmosphere and collecting data, but for us, it’s also a quiet flex that India’s space journey takes off from right here in Trivandrum. 📹 @trivandrum.indian

🚀 FROM BICYCLES TO MARS 🇮🇳✨ The Rise of India’s Space Program – The ISRO Story In 1963, in a small fishing village called Thumba, Kerala, a rocket was carried on a bicycle. There were no massive launch pads. No billion-dollar infrastructure. No global spotlight. Just vision. Just belief. 🔹 1962 – INCOSPAR was formed under the leadership of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai with the support of PM Jawaharlal Nehru. 🔹 1963 – India launched its first sounding rocket from Thumba. 🔹 1969 – ISRO was officially established. 🔹 1975 – Aryabhata, India’s first satellite, went into space. 🔹 1980 – SLV-3 successfully placed Rohini satellite into orbit. 🔹 1994 – PSLV era began, becoming India’s most reliable launch vehicle. 🔹 2008 – Chandrayaan-1 discovered water molecules on the Moon. 🔹 2014 – Mangalyaan reached Mars in the very first attempt. 🔹 2019 – Chandrayaan-2 orbiter continues lunar observations. 🔹 2023 – Chandrayaan-3 made a historic soft landing near the Moon’s South Pole. 🔹 2023 – Aditya-L1 launched to study the Sun. 🔹 Upcoming – Gaganyaan human spaceflight & India’s own space station. From transporting rocket parts on bicycles… To becoming the first nation to reach Mars on its first attempt… ISRO proved that limited resources cannot limit limitless ambition. This is not just a space story. This is India’s story. Of resilience. Of science. Of silent determination. Of rising beyond gravity. 🌍 Space technology today powers: • Communication • Weather forecasting • Disaster management • Navigation (NavIC) • Remote sensing • National security India didn’t just reach space. India made space work for its people. 🚀 From Villages to Stars. 🇮🇳 From Kerala, 1963 to the Moon’s South Pole. If this story made you proud, share it. How are sounding rockets made? 🚀 At Wallops, we not only assemble and launch sounding rockets, but we also *custom make* about 150 parts for each one! Sounding rockets are uncrewed missions that exit the atmosphere, but do not reach an altitude where they enter orbit, returning back to Earth instead. This allows for short, affordable science snapshots beyond the atmosphere. They carry scientific instruments between 30 and 300 miles above Earth’s surface. To take a sounding means to take a measurement. Instruments on board sounding rockets take measurements in the atmosphere and in space. Sounding rocket launches from Wallops date back to 1945, and they are still launched regularly today. This sub orbital sounding rocket is engineered for high altitude scientific missions offering researchers a fast and reliable way to gather atmospheric data. It travels straight upward before returning to Earth giving scientists valuable insights into upper air conditions that cannot be easily measured from the ground. Its stability relies on precise solid fuel burn patterns combined with spin control and aerodynamic shaping. These elements allow the rocket to remain steady even as it faces intense speed heavy pressure and extreme heat during its rapid climb through the atmosphere. At its highest point the rocket briefly enters a microgravity environment. This unique moment provides an opportunity to study physical reactions without the influence of gravity offering important information for experiments that support space research aviation development and future missions beyond low Earth orbit. Once its mission is complete the rocket reenters safely under specialized thermal protection systems. These systems shield it from heat and stress during descent ensuring that the collected data can be recovered intact and used to advance scientific understanding across multiple fields.
