Todo apps teach you CRUD. That is it. Interviewers have seen hundreds of them. They do not differentiate you from anyone else.
Here are 7 Spring Boot projects that actually teach you what production systems require:
-> Auth system with JWT, refresh tokens, and role based access. This is the foundation of every real application. If you cannot build auth from scratch you will struggle in any backend role.
-> Payment integration with Stripe webhooks. Money flowing through your system changes everything. Error handling, idempotency, and retry logic become critical.
-> Real time chat with WebSockets. Most developers only know request response. Building real time features teaches you connection management and scaling challenges.
-> Job scheduler with async processing and retries. Every production system has background work. Learning to handle failures gracefully is what separates junior from mid level.
-> URL shortener with analytics. Simple concept but it forces you to think about database indexing, redirect performance, and data aggregation.
-> File upload service with S3 and presigned URLs. File handling is messy. Learning to do it properly with cloud storage is a skill you will use in every job.
