KELooking around for an open-source 3D haptic device with high force rendering, I remembered that there was a very well-documented work for MIT mini Cheetah done by Benjamin Katz during his thesis. Many of the legged robots out there are based on this work.
Younger generation of robotic engineers have been focusing on it AI part, while there is so much work done in the past on the fundamentals of building amazing robots able to perform athletic performance and nature-like movements. It has been a while since the last time I saw an impressive breakthrough on hardware and probably this is a sign, that the bottleneck for large adoption of robots lies on the hands of AI. But that doesn't mean that there is no room for improvements and breakthroughs in hardware.
We need data for AI; Real data from the physical world.
These come from actuators that are commanded with precision and sensors that measure accurately in real time and give feedback to the system for decision-making at high bandwidth. Mechanisms designed with manufacturability and maintenability in mind.
The leg on the video is able to produce 150N vertical force and if inverted and mounted upside down, it becomes a 3D haptic device. It is designed to minimize the inertia on both the actuator and on the leg/arm itself making it ideal for high-speed dynamic robots that are designed to be "inherently safe". The design principle of bring the mass as close as possible to the base of the robot works quite well.
It is not ideal for 6D manipulation but it is quite good for the robotic community that is looking to have an open source teleoperation device and start collecting data.

SKA new open-source tool for Robotics Engineers and DIY community: NVIDIA Isaac Lab-Arena (link in the bio). Most of you already know and use Isaac Lab. With Isaac Lab-Arena, you can easily create new simulated environments and evaluate robot control policies. To build a new environment, you only need three main blocks: a Scene (all the objects); an Embodiment (the robot), and Tasks (pick-and-place, opening a door, pressing a button, etc.). You can create your own components or use the standard ones. Isaac Lab-Arena also has great documentation with examples, so everyone can try it.
