HIIt’s testing season for students and teachers! 📝 🧑🏾🏫
In the U.S., standardized testing has become a ritual of stress—for students and teachers alike. Proctors are expected to enforce strict rules: no questions to clarify, no deviations, no exceptions. Even when a student looks up with confusion or silently mouths, “What does this mean?”, teachers are barred from helping.
All they can offer is whispered encouragement or a quiet smile. Any slip-up from a proctor—accidental or well-meaning—can lead to penalties, investigations, or even invalidated scores. It’s emotionally draining to see students struggle, knowing that support is off-limits. It is hard to know you can help but cannot.
The logic is fairness: every student across the state or country must receive the same test under the same conditions. But it often feels cruel in practice, especially for students with test anxiety, language barriers, or learning differences. These tests have been proven to be biased against some students and don’t always accurately measure their overall knowledge.
Teachers, who dedicate their lives to helping students grow, are reduced to silent monitors. The pressure is high, and the purpose of it all—ranking, funding, comparison—feels disconnected from actual learning. Anyone who has had to proctor a test knows how terribly boring it usually is.
Other countries approach assessment differently. In Finland, for example, standardized testing is minimal; instead, there’s a focus on teacher-designed assessments, portfolios, and project-based learning. In Japan or South Korea, high-stakes exams exist but are paired with strong support systems and cultural emphasis on education as a shared responsibility.
Maybe it’s time the U.S. reevaluated its approach. Testing doesn’t have to mean silence and rigidity. We can imagine assessments that reflect real learning—creative, individualized, and human. The overemphasis on standardized tests has hurt our students and US education. Reform or abolition may not be simple, but the current system isn’t serving anyone well.

Teaching “test-taking hacks” has reduced test anxiety for my students because they feel empowered to control the variables they can control before & during standardized tests.
