1️⃣ Expectation: Rules won’t be that strict 💥 Reality: Curfew, lights-off time, no guests, no cooking 😭 At first I was like “why so strict?” but later I realized it helps with discipline. 2️⃣ Expectation: I’ll have enough privacy 💥 Reality: Sharing a room means no personal space sometimes. Headphones = best investment 🎧 3️⃣ Expectation: Language won’t be a big issue 💥 Reality: Dorm notices, announcements, even warnings are mostly in Korean. In the beginning, I missed a lot of info because of this. 4️⃣ Expectation: Food will be easy to manage 💥 Reality: Dorm food is convenient but not always foreigner-friendly. I missed desi food so much 🍛💔 5️⃣ Expectation: Roommates will be easy to deal with 💥 Reality: Different sleep times, habits, cleanliness levels. You learn patience… a LOT. 6️⃣ Expectation: I can control my room temperature 💥 Reality: Heating and AC are controlled 😭 You can’t always adjust it the way you want. 7️⃣ Expectation: Dorm life won’t feel lonely 💥 Reality: Dorm life can feel lonely, especially at night. If you want to study in Korea — or already do — read this carefully. What I did WRONG: 1️⃣ Believing that graduating from a top university guarantees a good job. Nope. A diploma alone won’t help. You need language certificates, internship experience, a strong CV, perfectly prepared interviews… and even then, many companies won’t sponsor your visa. You’ll often have to handle it yourself. ❗️Tip: Prepare in advance. Collect all documents, certificates, and visa requirements before graduation. 2️⃣ Thinking I could look for a job and take my English exam in my last semester. Big mistake. Job hunting in Korea takes time, and English exams (IELTS/TOEIC/TOEFL) require serious preparation and valid scores. Doing everything at the last minute only adds stress — and limits opportunities. ❗️Tip: Take your English exam early and start job searching before your final semester — you can even be hired one year before graduation. 3️⃣ Waiting for my professor to schedule meetings or review my article. I thought: “She’s busy, her work is more important than mine.” Result? I lost one full year waiting for feedback. ❗️Tip: Don’t wait. Be proactive. Ask: “When can we meet this week?” The more meetings you have, the better. 4️⃣ Making friends only with Koreans. I thought: “I’m here to learn Korean, why do I need foreign friends?” Wrong. Other foreigners understand your struggles in a way no Korean friend can — visas, integration, survival tips, free programs, and real-life advice. Learn from my mistakes. The convenience stores are TOO convenient. Which means it takes all your control to avoid going at 2am for dinner 4. Prices are so reasonable that it’s too easy to just chip and spend all your money :/ 5.
