OPSufism, the mystical dimension of Islam, is a path of inner transformation that seeks direct communion with the Divine through prayer, meditation, and purification of the soul. It is a journey of dissolving the ego and awakening the heart, where spirituality is deeply experienced.
One of its most striking expressions is the ritual of the Whirling Dervishes, or the Mevlevi ceremony, inspired by the 13th-century mystic Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī. More than a performance, it is an active meditation in which dervishes spin continuously, symbolizing the soul’s journey toward unity with God. Their attire is symbolic, the white skirt represents the burial of the ego, and the tall hat its tombstone. With the right hand raised to receive from God and the left lowered to give to humanity, they act as a bridge between heaven and earth.
Their spinning reflects cosmic harmony, accompanied by the sound of the reed flute and the chanting of the remembrance of God.
Recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, this sacred ritual remains central to the spiritual identity of Turkey, even as it is also experienced today as a cultural performance.
At its core lies a profound vision of death, expressed in the “Wedding Night” of Rumi. In Sufi understanding, death is not an end but a reunion with God. The words “night” and “wedding” symbolize union rather than loss. As Rumi said, “My day of death is not a day of mourning, but my wedding day,” reflecting death as completion and return.
Thus, this commemoration is not a night of mourning, but of remembrance, spiritual dance, and contemplation. It honors Rumi’s deep love for God, his surrender, and his view of death as fulfillment rather than fear. Today, it symbolizes overcoming the fear of death, moving from separation to unity, and turning from the self toward the Divine.
In a turbulent world, the dervish’s turning reminds us that beyond the self lies unity and in that unity, the soul finds peace.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a legendary Pakistani Qawwali singer, born on October 13, 1948, in Faisalabad. He belonged to a family with a 600-year tradition in Sufi music. With his powerful voice and soulful performances, he modernized and globalized Qawwali. Nusrat gained international fame through collaborations with Western artists like Peter Gabriel and Michael Brook. His famous songs include Afreen Afreen, Saanson ki mala pe, Ye jo halka halka suroor hai, Kali Kali zulfon ke phande na daalo, sochta hoon, Ankhiya udeek diyan, Aankh uthi mohabbat ne, Allah Hoo, and Tumhe Dillagi. He performed worldwide, spreading messages of love and spirituality. He passed away on August 16, 1997, but his music remains timeless.
