BLThis is a 1969 Leica M4 in beautiful original black paint finish.
Black paint Leicas have an undeniable presence, and original examples like this, complete with the scars and brassing earned through hard use, are the most fascinating.
Despite its value, this M4 is not a dainty collectible hoping for a quiet display shelf.
This is a camera that deserves to shoot, which is exactly what we are going to do, as this example has just returned from a full DAG service.
We’ll test with a roll of Kodak Ultramax to ensure this camera’s mechanical condition matches its beautiful exterior.
Just as we expect, film advance is silky smooth, DAG really does great work.
Now we need to select an appropriate optic to pair with this black paint M4, and what better lens than a classic 35mm f2 Summicron.
This lens is a third generation 35 Summicron, made by Leica from 1969-1979.
It has 6 optical elements and a very compact profile, making it a great period-correct combination with this M4.
The tactile feel of this kit is incredible, and the v3 Summicron delivers crisp, clean images with edge-to-edge sharpness — no surprises here.
That’s part of what makes Leica cameras so great — for all their value and aesthetic beauty, they are still highly capable tools, and like any good tool, they get out of the way and help you focus on creating.
If I could choose any Leica to shoot with for a lifetime, it would be a black paint M4 just like this one. Whoever gets this M4 is lucky indeed — which Leica camera would you choose?
