KAA peek into the process of what’s currently on my easel.
I started with an acrylic underpainting in Quinacridone Magenta to map out values and add some life beneath the oil paint. I don’t typically pick a color this bright for an underpainting but I did this time for a couple of reasons. First, a lot of the fish are so vibrant that I wanted to match that chroma in the underpainting. Second, there are some subtle magenta undertones throughout the composition, so I wanted some of those tones to show through. And finally, that magenta is also complementary to the background color.
When I started laying in the background colors, I loved the way the pink seemed to vibrate. I might have to revisit this with just those two colors. It would be so different but really fun!
When I started laying in the oranges of the fish and not all of the magenta was covered, I was questioning my life choices.
Remember: Trust. The. Process.
I’m at that wonderful point in this painting where I’m pushing details and then pulling them back, trying to find that delicate balance between detailed and painterly. I have truly loved every second I have worked on this painting so far.
