STOP letting go of your board in the impact zone!!! 🚫⛔️‼️ Yesterday at Jacking Horse, I witnessed something that should never be normalized in beginner surf conditions. A student from another group had just finished riding a wave and stayed in the impact zone without control of her board. She let it go… and within seconds, a small wave flipped it straight into her face. She ended up with a busted lip, trauma, and stitches. And honestly? It was completely avoidable. As a Filipina surf coach in Siargao, ISA-certified instructor, content creator, and head coach of @surfistasiargao, this is exactly why I speak up about safety. I advocate for safe surfing, ocean awareness, and empowering beginners to learn with confidence. Because too many people think small waves mean low risk. That’s NOT true. Surfing is a HIGH RISK sport no matter the conditions. Your surfboard can become the most dangerous thing in the water the moment you lose control of it. So let me say this clearly: After riding a wave, your board should always be beside you, NEVER in front of you. Hold onto it. Stay aware. Protect yourself and the people around you. What happened yesterday could have been prevented. And if this video helps even one person avoid getting hurt while learning to surf on vacation, then it matters. Safety in surfing is not optional. It’s the foundation. 🤙🏾 If you want more real surf tips like this, comment MORE SURF TIPS PLEASE. Also SAVE this for your next session and SHARE it with someone who needs to hear it!!! ❤️

The best surfers aren’t just the ones who stand up… they’re the ones who know how to stay safe. 🌊 As a Filipina surf coach here in Siargao Island in the Philippines, and an ISA-certified instructor teaching beginners every day, this is something I care deeply about. If you’re learning how to surf for the very first time here in Siargao or anywhere in the world, don’t just ask about your pop-up or your form. Ask about your safety. Ask how to paddle back out properly. Ask how to wipe out safely. Ask how to protect your head when you fall. Because surfing is fun… but it’s also a dangerous and risky sport. Through my years as a surf coach, content creator, and founder of @SurfistaSiargao, I’ve seen this over and over again: the students who learn how to stay safe are the ones who keep surfing, keep improving, and keep coming back to the ocean. The ones who don’t… sometimes end up cutting their trip short with a visit to the hospital or clinic. This Holy Week, when Siargao gets busy and the lineup fills up, the risks become even higher. There are more people in the water, and unfortunately, more uncertified instructors claiming to teach. That’s exactly why I keep sharing these reminders. Not to scare you… but to protect you. Because when you understand surf safety and ocean awareness, you give yourself the chance to enjoy the ocean longer, surf better, and fall in love with it the right way. As someone who built her life around surfing, from coaching to creating content and building @surfistavillasiargao, my goal has always been simple: help beginners feel confident, stay safe, and create a positive first experience in the water. I truly hope videos like this raise awareness, encourage people to ask better questions, and maybe even save a life one day. 🫶🏾🌴🤙🏾 SAVE and SHARE with a friend!!

The waves look fun… but the ocean is always changing. 🌊🤙🏾 Holy Week in Siargao Island and around the Philippines means crowded lineups, shifting conditions, and a lot of first-time surfers in the water. As a Filipina surf coach living and teaching here in Siargao for @surfistasiargao, this is something I see every single year… and something I always remind my students. Surfing isn’t something you fully learn in one lesson or even five. The ocean changes every single day. Tide, swell, wind, currents, and crowd all play a part. It takes time, experience, and real awareness to feel confident out there on your own… not just with your board, but with everything happening around you. Here are a few things to keep in mind: • Every surf session is different. What felt safe yesterday might not be safe today, so always take time to observe before going in • Understanding the ocean takes time. Don’t rush the process or overestimate your ability after just a few lessons • Learning to read waves, currents, and crowded lineups is just as important as standing up on the board • Confidence comes from consistent practice, patience, and real experience in different conditions • Always stay aware of other surfers. You’re sharing the ocean, not surfing alone • When in doubt, ask a local or a coach. It’s always better to learn than to guess For kids 🫶🏾 • Always surf with adult supervision or a coach • Choose smaller, beginner-friendly waves • Use soft-top boards for extra safety • Keep sessions short, fun, and pressure-free • Teach them to respect and understand the ocean early on As someone who shares surf safety tips, beginner surf advice, and real island life here in Siargao, I always remind people that surfing is a journey. Give it time, respect the ocean, and enjoy the process.🙏🏾🤙🏾🌊 SAVE this and SEND it to a friend who’s planning to surf in Siargao or in the Philippines (or anywhere in the world!) for the first time!!! 🌴🤙🏾

Just a reminder: surfing is an extreme sport and while it’s incredibly FUN, it also comes with real risks, especially for young children and beginner surfers. Siargao is a reef break, which means there is no soft, sandy bottom beneath our waves. Underneath is reef, coral, and rocks, making safety even more important during every surf lesson. The ocean is unpredictable. Children can easily get swept away by strong currents or lose control of their surfboards. That’s why at Surfista Siargao, we always provide trained catchers in the water especially for our kids’ surfing lessons. These professionals assist, guide, and literally catch your child after each wave to make sure they are safe. This conversation became even more important after journalist Karen Davila shared online that her son was injured while surfing in Siargao. While we sympathize with any parent whose child gets hurt, the incident also led to unfair assumptions about the professionalism of local surf instructors. As a surf coach and parent myself and alongside our head coach @olibayer, who is also a father, I felt it was necessary to speak up and defend the integrity and hard work of trained, safety-conscious instructors here on the island. As parents, it’s our responsibility to do research. Not everyone offering surf lessons on the beach is certified or experienced. Ask who the catchers are. Ask how they keep children safe in the water. Ask if they’ve worked with kids before. At @surfistasiargao, we focus on offering safe, professional, and enjoyable surf lessons for kids, families, and beginners visiting Siargao Island in the Philippines. We work closely with trusted local instructors and we’re proud of the system we’ve developed to keep everyone especially children as safe as possible while they enjoy the magic of surfing. PLOT twist… he’s my husband!! 🙈😅 POV: you think you have a crush on your surfing instructor in Siargao Island in the Philippines… and I’m right there on the beach watching him teach wave after wave like it’s just another normal day at work 🤙🏾🙈 Fun part… we actually met years ago during ISA surf instructor training. Two surfing coaches chasing waves, learning how to teach properly, and clearly not expecting that surf lessons would turn into marriage, a family, and running a surf school and accommodation together in Siargao ❤️ Now he helps guests fall in love with surfing at @surfistasiargao while I’m either coaching, filming, or reminding everyone that yes… the instructor is taken 😌🫶🏾 And when they stay nearby at @surfistavillasiargao, it basically becomes a full island surf life experience. Surfing in Siargao, learning from ISA certified instructors, tropical mornings, salty hair, and the occasional accidental crush on your coach… it happens 😉 So tell me… would you still book surf lessons in Siargao if your instructor looked like this? And remember… be careful who you fall in love with when you take their lessons in 🤭🌴🙈

Every surfer falls, misses waves

When you are learning how to surf for the first time, the most important words to remember are “try again.” 💪🏾💪🏾 Every surfer falls, misses waves, and feels frustrated at the start, but progress comes from getting back on your board with patience and courage. Saying “try again” reminds you that mistakes are part of learning, not signs that you cannot do it. As a surf coach here in Siargao, I see confidence grow when students give themselves permission to try one more time, and that simple mindset turns fear into strength and beginners into real surfers ❤️. If I were your surf coach sitting next to you in the lineup in Siargao, this is what I would tell you. I started this content series because I get SO many messages asking for surf coaching with me here in Siargao, especially from women looking for a female coach. As much as I wish I could surf with everyone, I cannot accommodate all the requests. So I am sharing my advice here instead, hoping these little reminders can still reach YOU in the water, wherever you are surfing in the world. 🫶🏾 Because coaching is not only about technique. It is also about MINDSET, patience, CONFIDENCE and BELIEVING in yourself. Many beginners and many female surfers just need encouragement and someone who understands what it feels like to start, fall, and try again. 💪🏾🌊 If this advice helped you or you want to remember it in the water, please LIKE, SAVE, and SHARE it with a friend who needs this reminder too!! 🤙🏾❤️ And feel free to comment your thoughts or tell me if this advice worked for you!! I love hearing your surf stories! From Elaine - your Filipina sister and surf coach living her island life in Siargao, head coach of @surfistasiargao and owner of @surfistavillasiargao, sharing surfing, family life and encouragement from our little island home in the Philippines. 🌴🌊
