This homemade version is simple, effective, and made with ingredients I actually trust.

Note: SPF varies based on zinc oxide percentage—do your research and always reapply.
Sunscreen
* 1/2 cup Grass-fed Tallow
* 1/2 cup Coconut oil or Olive oil
* 1-2 oz Beeswax pellets (more for a stiffer stick, less for cream)
* 2–4 tbsp Non-nano Zinc Oxide Powder (15% = ~SPF 15, 25% = ~SPF 30)
Instructions
1. Melt: Combine tallow, coconut oil, and beeswax in a double boiler over low heat until fully melted.
2. Cool: Remove from heat and let it cool for 5-10 minutes until warm, not hot.
3. Add Zinc: Stir in the non-nano zinc oxide. Safety note: Wear a mask to avoid inhaling the powder.
4. Whisk: Use a hand mixer or whisk to blend thoroughly to prevent the zinc from settling at the bottom.
5. Set: Pour into jars and let it cool completely at room temperature or in the fridge.

FIFive Marys tallow will ALWAYS be made from only the highest quality beef suet (the clean kidney fat, not beef trim fat!) we raise ourselves and make right here in our commercial kitchen, and send to you.
since tallow has gotten popular in the last couple years, there’s bigger companies taking poor quality beef fat and commercially cleaning and deodorizing to make large batches of tallow and apparently putting labels on to sell a small batch.
I don’t really feel like I even need to address this because you know we would never do that at Five Marys! We don’t have any interest in growing bigger than what we can raise, and stand behind the quality 100%.

COLately there’s been a lot of conversation around labs reaching out to tallow brands, offering to take over production and move everything into a lab setting. I received one of those emails many months ago and honestly had a good laugh, and if you’ve been here a while, you already know why.
I’m a solo business owner, and every part of my business runs through my own hands. I formulate and make every product, label each jar, manage social media, answer customer emails, pack orders, and handle all the behind-the-scenes work that comes with running a small business. This level of involvement is intentional.
One day, I’d love to bring on help to support things like social media and packaging orders, so my focus can be fully on testing, formulating, and making the products. Even then, the heart of this business will remain hands-on. When a restock takes a full week, it’s simply the natural limit of how much one person can create with care and intention.

THWhipped lavender tallow! Feels so soft and fluffy.
Here’s the recipe:
In a double boiler, gently melt 8oz (225g) rendered tallow with 2oz (56g) of your chosen carrier oil over low heat (almond oil or jojoba). Make sure you melt them together. Add 20 ish drops of your preferred essential oil. Let cool on the counter, then whip until you get your desired consistency.
