For Liberty, that is not imagination. It is communication.
A “time machine” is her way of saying my nervous system needs a reset and I want a chance to try again.
When an autistic child is dysregulated, their brain is in threat mode. Language breaks down. Words come out scrambled. The body is in fight, flight, or freeze. What you are watching here is Liberty using a self created regulation tool in the middle of distress.
The most important part of this moment is what happens off camera. I regulate myself first. When I stay calm and say thank you for telling me how you feel and you cannot make me mad, I am sending safety to her nervous system. Safety is what allows her language to come back online.
Giving her a redo is not giving in. It is giving control back to a nervous system that feels trapped. Liberty has a PDA profile, which means loss of control can feel physically overwhelming. When she gets to choose when we restart and where we meet again, her body finally feels safe enough to settle.
That is why you see her go from dysregulated to regulated in under a minute.
Autism, for us, is not about fixing behavior.
It is about relearning how to communicate in stressful moments so both of our nervous systems can meet in the middle.
