DENETWORKING PROTOCOLS
Explained Without a Single Line of Code

Most people learn networking like this:
“TCP is this… UDP is that… DNS is something…”
Then they open a SIEM, see 5,000 events, and realize they understand nothing.
Because networking isn’t a vocabulary test.
It’s a story: who asked, who answered, what changed, and what’s now possible.
The Packet’s 5-Stop Journey
1️⃣ FIND — Name → Address
•DNS: The internet’s phonebook (and a common place attackers hide anomalies)
•ARP: “Who has this IP?” on your local network
•mDNS: Devices announcing names on local networks (useful, but noisy)
2️⃣ JOIN — Get onto the Network
•DHCP: Assigns IP address, gateway, and network settings
•802.1X: “Prove who you are before you join” (access control at the door)
3️⃣ TALK — Move Data
•TCP: Reliable delivery (ordered, retransmitted)
•UDP: Fast delivery (speed over guarantees)
•ICMP: Network health signals (ping, unreachable, errors)
•HTTP / HTTPS: Web requests and responses
•QUIC: Modern web speed (HTTP/3 over UDP)
4️⃣ TRUST — Identity & Encryption
•TLS: Encryption wrapper protecting confidentiality and integrity
•SSH: Secure remote access (loved by admins, abused when exposed)
•VPN (IPsec / SSL): Private tunnels over public networks
•Kerberos: Ticket-based authentication in Windows environments
•LDAP: Directory lookups (users, groups, access)
5️⃣ OBSERVE — Monitor & Manage
•SNMP: Device health, monitoring, and inventory
•Syslog: The network’s diary (if it’s not logged, it didn’t happen)
•NetFlow: Traffic summaries (who talked to whom, how much, and when)
•NTP: Time synchronization (without it, incident timelines fall apart)
Why this matters in real cybersecurity work
•”Suspicious DNS” isn’t a buzzword — it’s often the first sign of compromise.
•”Time drift” isn’t minor — it can break your entire investigation timeline.
•”It’s just HTTPS” isn’t reassuring — it means you need context, not guesswork.
Networking isn’t theory.
It’s how attackers move, hide, and get caught.
