If you step away for 30 days, does revenue slip? If you’re not in the meeting, does it get closed? Is your onboarding actually documented, or does it live in your head? Can your team replicate the client experience without you? If the answer to any of those is no, you don’t have a business. You have a personality with overhead. I get it. You built this. Your relationships are real. Your clients trust you specifically. That feels like an asset. But buyers don’t buy personality. They buy structure. The tip of the iceberg is your logo, your website design, your office furniture, your signage. Visible. Feels productive. Doesn’t matter. Just below the surface is social media posts, email campaigns, website funnels. Helpful? Sure. Imperative? No. Because if your underlying structure is weak, none of it matters. Deeper is documented processes. Onboarding. Client review cadence. Defined service models. Most advisors don’t have any of this written down. They wing it. And if it’s not documented, it’s not transferable. And if it’s not transferable, it doesn’t build enterprise value. Deeper still is data. Not vanity metrics. Not “I had a good quarter.” What happens to your EBITDA at 60% retention? At 80%? If you’re not running models, you’re guessing. And guessing compresses valuation. Even deeper is positioning. Who do you actually serve and what do you stand for? Client positioning increases durability. And durability is what expands your multiple. At the bottom is structure without you. If you want to sell your practice and actually achieve financial freedom, there is one principle that matters above everything else. Stop building for income. Start building for transferability. Most advisors are optimizing for production. But production does not determine your multiple. Durability does. If your retention model assumes 100% client transfer, you are guessing. Sophisticated buyers model 60, 70, and 80%, and they price in the risk. Every single time. If your business depends on you personally, it is not an enterprise. It is employment with overhead. If 20% of your revenue comes from two households, your multiple gets destroyed. If your margin is thin because you built complexity over structure, private equity does not care about your top line.
