It’s the triggerfish 😅 Story time: I was snorkeling in Okinawa at a beautiful dive site when, about five minutes in, I felt a nibble on my left leg. At first, I thought I’d bumped into something, so I kept swimming and filming a school of fish until this happened. I’ve encountered many triggerfish in the past, but never an angry one like this. 🐟 Triggerfish are super territorial during nesting season and will charge at anyone who gets too close. Most are pretty chill… until you meet an angry one. To escape their territory you need to swim DOWN and BACK. Do NOT swim up, as they will come from below you. No fish was harmed in the filming of this video. This fish was not provoked on purpose. This territorial little (or maybe not so little) bugger is responsible for more attacks on divers than probably anything else I can think of. Yes, they actually break skin and masks. Even the so called “apex predator” sharks are scared of them. So if you’re in the “cone of death” which radiates upwards from where the triggerfish keep their nests, you better get out right away . . . I kept my distance, but even being nearby was enough to trigger defensive behavior. Titan Triggerfish are infamous for aggressively protecting their eggs, and this dive was a powerful reminder of why divers fear them.
