CAUndersteer VS Oversteer in racing. Understeer is essentially when the front tires are performing below the steering input request (front-drifting lol), and oversteer is when the front is turning more than the rear can keep up with (classic drifting). SIUndersteer 👉 you’re fkd. You’re a passenger holding on for dear life. Nothing you can do except get off the gas, easy on the brakes to not (further) upset the car’s weight balance (if you can left foot brake, all the better), wind off steering lock to reduce load on tyres and help regain traction, and hope and pray that it all happens before you fall down the mountain (or land up in the ice bank)
Oversteer 👉 You’re da boss. Your right foot on the throttle is playing with the angle of the slide. You’re steering to hold and control the slide. You’re in full control (until you’re not and then you’re looking at a big one 🙈). You look like a hero. You’re making the car dance to your tune. The world applauds
All road cars are setup to understeer at the limit to cater to the 99 percentile driving ability. Most race cars are setup to be neutral or even oversteer-y, cause that way the driver is in control, you put the nose where you want it to go and your skill / reactions take care of whatever is happening at the back end of the car
