Value at Risk (VaR) isn’t a dangerous formula by itself. It’s actually quite useful , it tells you the maximum you could lose 99 percent of the time
The danger? The context it was used in
Every major firm on wall street lived and died by this number. They trained it on calm years (2001–2005) , ignored tail risks and handed executives a number that basically screamed “we’ve got this under control.”
They didn’t.
Charles Wheelan nails it perfectly in Naked Statistics:
“The VaR was like a faulty speedometer — which is arguably worse than no speedometer at all.
If you trust a broken speedometer, you stop paying attention to everything else around you.
And that’s exactly what happened.
The model gave false precision which created false confidence
So when that 1 percent event hit, nobody was looking out the window anymore.
VaR has been called “potentially catastrophic”and “a fraud” — not because the math was wrong, but because smart people forgot that statistics cannot be any smarter than the people who use them 🧠

SUWACC (Weighted Average Cost of Capital) is a concept that causes a TON of confusion.
It’s usually taught with formulas and a bunch of finance theory, but the underlying point is often missed when this concept is explained.
The critical thing to understand here is that any asset is by definition funded by capital (typically debt and equity). And further any capital provider will have a target rate of return based on the risk that they are taking.
If we were to look at just the target return of one individual provider of capital, we wouldn’t capture the target rate of return for the entire asset, but rather the target rate of return of that individual capital provider based on their position in the hierarchy.
So with the weighted average cost of capital formula, we take a weighted average expected return of all the capital providers which shows us the overall expected target return for the asset as if it was owned outright by a single person/entity.
