Vicha Ratanapakdee's brutal death was a flashpoint for Asian Americans across the country. On Saturday, the community unveiled Vicha Ratanapakdee Way in the Anza Vista neighborhood to honor his life.
Actor @danieldaekim, Ratanapakdee's daughter Monthanus, and civil rights activist @amandangocnguyen were among several featured speakers.
Ratanapakdee died in an unprovoked attack during his morning walk in January of last year.
The street is the first in the state to be named for a Thai American.

GIRemembering Grandpa Vicha. It’s been three years since he was violently shoved to the ground while taking a walk around his San Francisco neighborhood. He later died. His case gained national attention, eventually becoming the impetus of the movement to stop violence against AAPI’s. The remembrance also highlighted the brutal death of Michelle Go, of Fremont. She was killed when she was pushed into the path of an oncoming New York City Subway train more than two years ago. Delays have plagued the criminal cases for both Grandpa Vicha and Go with no trial date set for either.
“I want everyone to hear our stories, of the victims. Our stories going to be make change, I hope,” said Monthanus Ratanapakdee, Grandpa Vicha’s daughter.
“The grief, the depression, anxiety, anger, still sits with us. I don’t know if it will ever go away,” Justin Go, Michelle Go’s father, said. He hopes people understand that Asian Americans are part of the fabric of this country as he joins a list he says nobody wants to be on: loved ones of people of AAPI descent who are killed in these attacks and are continuing to seek justice for them.
Helen Zia is an activist, journalist, and author. She became well known for her community work when Vincent Chin, a Chinese American was beaten to death in Detroit by two white autoworkers in 1982. It was a time when the U.S. auto industry faced growing troubles as a recession impacted jobs.
Zia said she is “sick and tired” of these attacks against Asian Americans, calling it anti-human.
“We have seen great changes since the time that I started having memorials 41 years ago for Vincent Chin,” Zia said. “There are so many more organizations, so many more people standing up,” she said. Zia went on to say, “If we can harness that in today’s remembrance, it’s so important because it’s not just remembering the people, it’s remembering that we can do something about it.”

This 78-year old man with a cane was walking along New Montgomery the morning of January 8th on his way to his daughter’s home.

You can see in this video, used in the police investigation, he is approached from behind and in an instant attacked and knocked to the ground.

The man’s daughter, “S” told me her dad was originally wanted to brush it off and just move on. (We joked my own dad would have done the same…it’s an old school Asian thing.)

But she wanted to speak out and make people aware that these attacks on the elderly are happening in the city. Perhaps by sharing someone out there can identify the man who did this.

Back in August you may remember I broke the story of Greg Chew, the 70-year old longtime commissioner in San Francisco who was attacked in a similar fashion while also walking down the street not far from this location. This crime also reminds me of Vicha Ratanapakdee’s death. It is almost the 2-year anniversary.

Thankfully the man didn’t suffer internal bleeding and is going to be okay. However, S knows this could have been much worse.

With SFPD telling me no arrests have been made. S is grateful to the nearby building worker who rushed to her dad’s aid and chased the suspect off.
