OUDuring the Second Battle of Ypres in April 1915, Canadian troops faced the first large-scale poison gas attack of the First World War.
Amid the chaos, Lance-Corporal Frederick William Fisher of the 13th Battalion (Royal Highlanders of Canada) pushed his machine gun forward under heavy fire to slow the German advance. After his weapon was damaged, he returned alone to retrieve it and bring it back into action. He was killed while attempting to do so.
For his extraordinary bravery, Fisher was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, becoming Canada’s first VC recipient of the First World War.

On June 6, 1944, more than 14,000 Canadian soldiers landed on Juno Beach during the D-Day invasion of Normandy.

During the First World War, about 1,300 Black Canadians served in the Canadian military. Some were turned away when they tried to enlist, while others pushed back against those barriers and served in units across the Canadian Expeditionary Force.
Jeremiah Jones was one of them. Enlisting at age 58, he fought at the Battle of Vimy Ridge, where he showed remarkable bravery. In this clip, his great-grandson Al Jones reflects on what that legacy means today.

In 1812, during the War of 1812, many American leaders thought invading British-controlled Canada would be simple. Some even believed Canadians would welcome them and join the United States. The plan sounded straightforward: march north, defeat a few British forces, and take control.
But reality was very different. British troops, Canadian militias, and Indigenous allies quickly pushed back. Battles were fought across the border, and instead of a quick victory, the war dragged on for years. In fact, at one point British forces even marched into Washington, D.C., and burned parts of the city, including the White House, in 1814. 🔥
By the end of the conflict, neither side had gained new territory. The war ended with the Treaty of Ghent in 1814, restoring borders to how they were before the war began. Canada remained separate, and the invasion plan became one of history’s biggest military miscalculations.

The War of 1812 was a conflict filled with strange twists, dramatic turns, and unexpected consequences, and when told in detail it feels almost like a suspenseful epic.
It began in June 1812 when President James Madison asked Congress to declare war on Britain. The reasons were complex: Britain’s navy was seizing American merchant ships, forcing sailors into service through “impressment,” and restricting American trade while Britain fought Napoleon in Europe. Many Americans also dreamed of annexing Canada, believing it would be easy to conquer. Congress approved the war, but the nation was divided — New England merchants opposed it, fearing economic ruin, while western and southern states pushed for it, hoping to expand territory.
The early campaigns were disastrous for the United States. In October 1812, American forces attempted to invade Canada but were defeated at the Battle of Queenston Heights. British General Isaac Brock, aided by Canadian militia and Indigenous warriors, repelled the invasion. Brock was killed in the battle, but his leadership became legendary in Canada, symbolizing resistance against American expansion.
Indigenous alliances played a crucial role. The Shawnee leader Tecumseh built a confederacy of tribes to resist American encroachment, fighting alongside the British. At sea, however, the United States had surprising successes. In 1814, the war escalated dramatically. With Napoleon defeated in Europe, Britain redirected its full military power to North America. British troops marched into Washington, D.C., burning the White House, the Capitol Building, and other government structures.

During WWI, the Canadian Army was made up entirely of volunteers. No draft, no conscription, just raw, maple-syrup-fueled rage. These men didn’t just show up to fight, they showed up to win dirty.
One of their most savage tricks? Exploiting German hunger by tossing canned food across No Man’s Land. At first, the Germans thought the Canadians were being generous. Some would even call out for more food, unknowingly revealing their location.
A few cans would be tossed to draw a crowd…..then came the punchline: a grenade, lobbed in last. Boom.
By the later years of the war, Canadian troops had become feared on the Western Front. They were aggressive, relentless, and terrifying in close combat. German soldiers called them “storm troops” or “shock troops”, in awe of their ability to take positions others couldn’t.
They were more feared than even the British or French, especially after the bloodbaths at Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele.
And with tactics like these? The legend only grew.
They weren’t just soldiers. They were lumberjacks with bayonets and no chill.
