Petition to rebrand “squatters rights” as something more descriptive with less historical baggage such as “residents rights.” There's *should* be nothing wrong with being a squatter, but too few people hear this term and identify themselves with it. . It’s up to us to defend each other against the parasite class. Knowing and defending our rights is critical to keeping people housed and safe. . So tell a friend to tell a friend: Residents rights are all our rights. . . . Postscript: As @resist_zine points out in the pinned comment, there *should* be nothing wrong with the term "squatter" or "squatters rights." Squatters - particularly those who reclaim space for the people - do a service to all. If we can re-appropriate this language so it doesn't carry the baggage it has for some people, that would be great. But in the short-term thinking about squatters rights as part of the umbrella of tenants / residents rights may be helpful for people as they begin to understand that they too are part of the collective who are deserving of shelter whether they can consistently pay for it or not. . . . Not real names. Normally we wouldn’t post pictures of someone’s private living space but considering the circumstances, the humanization seems appropriate. In regards to the trash- if you think that is a reason to displace or degrade someone, please kindly go an entire day without throwing anything in the trash. Collect it all & carry it with you. Every single wrapper, food container, single-use plastic, q-tip, carry it all with you. Then reconsider. There are no encampment waste management services but many residents tried to keep it clean, regularly raking & sweeping. They really tried but it’s such an uphill battle when you’re living outdoors & fighting just to stay safe. They had just started an encampment Union/Support group, too. A friend said they were realizing that despite their differences, a lot of them were dealing with the same exact struggles. Poverty, lack of healthcare or education, criminalization, ostracization. Their first meeting was a couple weeks before the encampment sweep. Would’ve loved to be a part of that.
