WIBo is pretty grateful that she is not a beaver living in the wild. (she is a non-releasable educational ambassador)
Thankfully all of our beavers destined for the wild are thriving in the snow ❄️ 🦫but I don't socialize with them like Bo.
This video is from last year, but Bo's feeling feelings have not changed.
Even in the really cold weather the outside beavers are sticking to their mostly nocturnal schedule, and we rarely see Arrow or Gretchen or the wild beavers we monitor via camera during the daylight. With our support, Gretchen and Arrow have spent the winter outdoors and built a well insulated lodge, proving themselves ready for release this year. Even Gretchen has done a good job staying waterproof and maintaining her coat.
Even in the wild, beavers only really leave the lodge in winter when absolutely necessary, there is less open water for them to escape into if a predator arrives, and they spend the summer making a food cache underwater that they swim to from the underwater entrance of their lodge, grab a snack, and then go back inside.
Bo will stick to being branch manager and her life of leisure.

OUA year after first entering the water together, Bo and her caretaker, Alexis Broz, still swim regularly. Bo the beaver, now a licensed educational ambassador with Wild For Life Inc., is part of an ongoing effort to help people better understand the ecological role beavers play in healthy ecosystems.
Some days are spent swimming side by side; others are observed from the shore—both part of a routine central to their work together.

The first time Bo asked me to swim with her.
What a magical journey this connection has embarked us on.
The love that Bo has inspired for her species in millions around the world, and the wonderful opportunity and challenge that she has given me to push myself to become a better educator and advocate, is a gift.
Next month in December, Bo and I will travel to schools, a wildlife education center, a library, a brewery, and a town meeting together.
It is such a wonderful blessing to be able to share my passion for beavers, and the critical habitats that they create and protect. 💚🦫
