Can you turn a small space backyard garden into a food forest? Sure can! 🍅🍆🥒🌶 I have over 16 tomato plants, 6 cucumber plants, 13 pepper plants, 8 kale plants, 4 ground cherries, 7 eggplants, 1 watermelon plant and so much more growing in just 6 raised beds! How big is your veggie garden? What do you prefer - a big garden or small garden? #veggiegarden #foodforest #backyardgarden #urbangarden #backyardgardening #smallspacegarden #garden #vegetablegarden #growfood #growsomething #gardeninspiration #garden #showusyourgarden #backyardbounty #summergarden #gardenlove #thehappygardeninglife #organicgarden #healthylifestyle #backyardveggies #sustainablesprout #urbanorganicgardener #gardensofinstagram #kitchengarden #victorygarden #intensiveplanting #njgarden #zone6b

Many hardy annuals actually prefer cool soil, germinating as temperatures slowly warm in early spring. Most of these do best in full sun, and they are all self-sowing annuals, meaning they often drop seed and return on their own each year. Bachelor buttons – Direct sow 4–6 weeks before your last frost. Calendula – Sow 4–6 weeks before your last frost. Nigella (love-in-a-mist) – I start sowing mine in winter and continue sowing through spring. Larkspur – Sow 4–8 weeks before your last frost. Phacelia – Sow a few weeks before your last frost, once the soil can be worked. California poppies – Best sown closer to your last frost date. They like cool soil to germinate but don’t love sitting in very cold, wet ground for long. Zones: These flowers generally grow as annuals in zones 2–11, with larkspur best suited to zones 2–7. Just be sure your soil is workable and not waterlogged before planting. New here? This bed looks amazing, if I do say so myself, even with such high temperatures this season and very little rain. Full Disclosure: I think I’ve watered it once. I planted most of these perennials in fall of 2019 so they’ve had time to establish and develop deep roots. A full list is at the end for you to screenshot. You’ll see that my echinacea is a cultivar because it looked cool and I didn’t learn until afterwards that you should always lean towards natives species over sterile cultivars. I have a few native coneflowers elsewhere and love the goldfinch display that comes with them!! I’m in Zone 6b, NJ. Use must use FREE organic resources like DRIED LEAVES or leaf mold to mulch your soil in fall and winter. It creates the most rich, dark, beautiful, loamy soil underneath that’s ready for planting come spring! 🍂🌱 #organicmatter #compost #sustainablegardening #driedleaves #mulch #organicgardening #vegetablegardening #soil #soilhealth #gardening #gardeningtips #inmygardentoday #reelsvideo #instagramreels #zone6b #njgardening #februarygarden #reshgala

BOTTOM WATERING: WHY YOU SHOULD!🌱 A common problem that many gardeners will face at some point is mold growing on the soil. There are a few factors that can cause this, but most often, it’s due to over-watering or poor air circulation. I practice bottom watering, which means my pots are sitting in a tray with a solid base (1020 tray without holes). I pour the water directly into the tray and then set my plants in the water. The soil will slurp up what it needs, and after thirty minutes to an hour, I can drain off any extra. I keep a fan running at all times around my indoor garden. This helps the plants grow stronger because of the wind but also helps the soil to dry quicker. This reel is a companion to a guest blog post I wrote for my friends at @bootstrapfarmer called A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO YEAR-ROUND GARDENING ON YOUR HOMESTEAD In this essay I share my best tips for starting a successful, growing year-round on the homestead and so much more! Do you do this to your marigold? Notice that the plant branches out just below the flower so if we pinch off the first flower it encourages bushier growth and more blooms later. Many flowers and herbs benefit from this pinching aka topping. Relieving the plant of working on first blooms and growth we redirect energy into the lower branching growth! #marskitchengarden #marigold #toppingflowers #pinchingflowers #zone6garden #zone6gardening #zone6b #kitchengardening #kitchengardens

I was so worried about leaving my garden for vacation. 🫠 Luckily my neighbor helped out with watering and everything looked pretty great when I got back. Except for my cauliflower which was destroyed by cabbage worms 😭 I did have several broccoli crowns make it through at least! ❤️ now excepting all cabbage worm prevention tips 😥 p.s. these boots from @merrypeople are my new favorite garden shoes! . . . #beginnergardener #zone6b

Fingers crossed I can finally grow lavender! Its been a hard one for me to start from seed. This method isn’t limited to lavender seeds though. Lots of plants can be started this way RIGHT NOW, with snow on the ground ❄️👏🏻 Cabbage Cauliflower Chard Lettuce Broccoli Brussel sprouts Kale Spinach Rosemary Celery Clover Barley What’s next? Allow your seeds to grow. It can take 1-3 months depending on your garden zone. It’s a completely hands off process until the seeds sprout. Once seedlings sprout, take care to protect them from frost. Last step is to transplant into the garden when needed. Want to learn more about this winter sowing method? My friend @saraonthefarm encouraged me to try it. See her page for more…she’s been using this method for years! #wintersowing #growinglavender #milkjugpropagating #flowergardening #growingflowers #2024garden #zone6b

I planted these in MARCH 🌷 We live in New England, zone 6b, and we would normally plant tulip bulbs in the fall. A friend (thank you Kelly) recommended we store the bulbs in the fridge for the winter, and plant them end of January/February Now, I never got to planting until March 😳, I wasn't sure if they would bloom, but they did!!! Storing them in the fridge prevents them from rot if there's too much moisture, and it keeps them at a consistent temp during the season. I wouldn't wait so long next time, but I will absolutely do this again next year! 🌷 would you try this? We got our tulips from @wickedtulips, the mixed bag variety. I absolutely love being surprised at what colors will bloom!!! I can't wait to figure out what to plant in these new planters after tulip season!!
