AT5 big mistakes I think 1Ls make ⬇️
1. Go through the motions but don’t understand what they are actually doing. Reading the material but not knowing what you are supposed to be looking for is a big mistake first year law students make.
2. Worrying about one specific area of law. Do not get too bogged down into one practice area. Keep your mind open to other areas, just because you find one class easy or you succeed in it doesn’t mean that that’s the type of law that you should practice. Get experience in all different types of law before you really start narrowing down your classes or opportunities.
3. Not talking to professors. So many students forget that it’s important to make a connection with your professors. It’s important that you feel comfortable being able to talk to them and ask them questions. I think everybody should make a point to go and talk to their professors one on one. This can either be after class or during office hours. Just go say hi and introduce yourself-having this first introduction out of the way can really ease up your anxiety later on in the semester when you’re not understanding what’s going on I need to ask for help.
4. Treating law school like undergrad. Law school is not like your undergrad. It requires a lot more work and attention to detail. Going into it with the same mindset that you had i undergrad and the same effort or study skills can easily result in you falling behind. Law school requires a lot of time and effort, and if you’re willing to give it that, then you can succeed!
5. Copying others outlines. Especially early on as a first year student this can be really tempting to do when you don’t understand how to outline. But this can easily dig you into a deeper hole. It is best to do your own work and create your own outlines rather than relying on ones from other people.
