Let's expand our understanding of "hyperactivity." 💫Looking for more info on Giftedness & Overexcitibilities? Comment LEARN MORE💫 When I first started teaching and hearing about ADHD in educational settings, I heard that word "hyperactive" and my mind jumped (pun intended) to kids bouncing out of their seats, running around, just uncontrollable physical energy. And yes, it CAN be that. But it can also look like hyperactivity of the brain - which is why according to this study that looked at teacher/parent rating of ADHD/Non-gifted, Gifted/Non-ADHD and Gifted/ADHD - the one area where Gifted/ADHD scored significantly higher was in "hyperactivity." Specifically, these three areas: ✅️Excessive talking ✅️Talking out of turn ✅️Fidgeting/movement 💡So what can we do with this?💡 It can be hard to tease out Psychomotor Overexcitibility vs. ADHD. This isn't a diagnostic checklist by any means, but this study sheds light on the fact that if your GT child is exhibiting these three behaviors with consistency and intensity, it could warrant a deeper look. 📣My 2E (specifically adhd/gifted) people...do you feel like this fits YOU? 💫Looking for more info on Giftedness & Overexcitibilities? What’s often called “high functioning” isn’t always functioning well. It’s often compensation. Many people who get labeled as “high functioning” are actually 2e (twice exceptional) — gifted (IQ 98th+ percentile) and living with a learning or developmental disability (ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, AuDHD, etc.) High ability can hide struggle. Strong output can mask regulation issues. Especially in females. That’s where overlap matters. This diagram doesn’t show diagnoses — it shows shared traits that exist across ADHD, autism, and giftedness. You can have a shared trait and only fall in one category. Those overlaps are why: • ADHD can be missed • Autism can be misunderstood • AuDHD can feel close but not quite right for some • And 2e often goes unnamed Overlap doesn’t mean the same nervous system. And “high functioning” doesn’t mean well supported. This isn’t about replacing labels. It’s about understanding why so many people never felt fully explained. 5 Challenges of Twice-Exceptional Learners (2e) 🚀 But first—what does twice exceptional (2e) mean?🤔 👉It refers to individuals who are both gifted and have learning or developmental challenges 🙋‍♀️(such as ADHD, dyslexia, or autism). This unique combination comes with incredible strengths and unexpected challenges. Here are 5 common struggles 2e learners face: 1️⃣ Patience Struggles: Their giftedness allows them to excel in some areas, but it can be frustrating when they encounter subjects that don’t come as easily. 2️⃣ Misunderstood as Lazy or Unmotivated: Many 2e learners are labeled as lazy when they don’t perform at their peak, as the misconception persists that gifted kids should excel at everything if they try hard enough. 3️⃣ Self-Esteem Issues: Weaknesses can take a toll on their self-image, leading to feelings of inadequacy. 4️⃣ Lack of Engagement: It’s tough to motivate them for work that doesn’t spark their interest or seem valuable. 5️⃣ Social and Emotional Challenges: Many 2e learners experience difficulties with social awareness and emotion regulation, making connections with peers harder. Recognizing these challenges is the first step toward providing the support they need. 💪 Are you or someone you know twice-exceptional? Many (but not all) ADHDers walk like this because: ADHDers have more gray matter in the cerebellum, greater postural sway, comorbidities like dyspraxia, and sometimes we just have more clutter to trip over. *NOT AN ADHD DIAGNOSTIC CRITERION!!! Not all ADHDers do this and doing this doesn’t mean you have ADHD. It’s just a commonly shared ADHD experience. ADHD looks different in girls… and because of that, they’re often overlooked. Girls with ADHD are less likely to be diagnosed early—if at all. In fact, research shows boys are diagnosed 2–3 times more often than girls, not because ADHD is less common in girls, but because it shows up differently and is misunderstood. Here’s what ADHD often looks like in girls: ✨ Internalized symptoms — instead of being disruptive, many girls with ADHD are more inattentive, anxious, or perfectionistic. ✨ Daydreaming, not hyperactivity — they may seem “spacey” or “off in their own world,” and get labeled as dreamy, lazy, or shy. ✨ Emotional intensity — big reactions, sensitivity to rejection, and deep feelings are common, but often dismissed as moodiness. ✨ Masking and people-pleasing — girls often work hard to “blend in,” hiding their struggles until they burn out or break down. ✨ Social challenges — trouble picking up on cues, maintaining friendships, or coping with peer dynamics can lead to loneliness or low self-esteem. ✨ Delayed diagnosis — many aren’t diagnosed until high school, college, or even adulthood—after years of struggling in silence. This invisibility can take a toll. Undiagnosed or unsupported ADHD in girls is linked with increased risk of anxiety, depression, disordered eating, and low self-worth. The good news? When we recognize how ADHD shows up in girls, we can provide support that actually helps. 🧠💛 That’s what Quiet the Chaos is all about—giving parents the tools to understand and support their neurodivergent child exactly as they are. ✨ If you’re raising a girl with ADHD (or think you might be), tap the link in bio to join Quiet the Chaos and learn how to build routines, improve emotional regulation, and strengthen your connection—without overwhelm. #ADHDgirls #GirlsWithADHD #InattentiveADHD #ADHDparenting #QuietTheChaos #ADHDawareness #NeurodiverseKids #ADHDsupport #ExecutiveFunction #NurtureADHD

ADHD isn’t broken focus.
It’s a brain trying to survive information overload.👇 If you have ADHD, your brain doesn’t calmly go
“this matters” → keep
“this doesn’t” → discard. Instead, everything shows up at the same volume. The main idea.
A side note.
A random example.
A sentence that might be important. All equally loud. So highlighting isn’t really about emphasis.
It’s triage. Your brain going:
“Please… just let me remember something.” Here’s the part most people don’t understand:
ADHD is closely tied to limited working memory. Which creates this constant background fear while reading:
“If I don’t mark this now, it’s gone.” Highlighting also sneaks in a dopamine hit:
• a small physical action
• instant visual feedback
• the feeling of progress So you end up:
✔️ highlighting most of the page
✔️ feeling productive
✔️ finishing the chapter
❌ remembering almost nothing That’s not laziness.
That’s a coping strategy. If highlighting feels automatic, don’t try to stop it - contain it. What works better for ADHD brains: 1️⃣ The one-sentence rule
After a paragraph, write ONE sentence in your own words.
No highlighting until that sentence exists. 2️⃣ Question-based highlighting
Only mark text that answers:
“Why does this matter?”
“How would I explain this to someone else?” 3️⃣ Color = function (not vibes)
🟡 definition
🔵 example
🔴 test-relevant If you can’t explain why it’s highlighted… don’t highlight it. But also don’t feel bad for highlighting a bit more..that’s just how your brain works 💙
