3 Things I DON’T do to run Sub-2 in the 800m… 1️⃣ Skip strength work – You can break 2 without gym, but it’ll take longer. Strength keeps you injury-free, boosts running economy, and gives you power late in the race. I do 2x gym sessions weekly. 2️⃣ Ditch speed in winter – Speed is a skill, not just fitness. In winter I do longer sprints (150–200m) to stay sharp, then shorter 60s in summer. If you ignore speed in the off-season, you’ll be catching up when it’s race time. 3️⃣ Avoid speed-endurance – Most fall off pace in the 2nd-last 200m. I fix this with workouts like 2×(3×200m) + all-out 600m to train that extra gear under fatigue. 👉 Follow for more 800m tips.

Running a 2:16 was honestly the best thing that could have happened to me. It humbled me. It exposed every weakness I was ignoring and forced me to face the truth about my training, my habits, and my mindset. That time lit a fire in me. It showed me exactly how far I had to go and convinced me that if I wanted real change, I had to become a different athlete. That race pushed me to stay consistent, stay hungry, and stay honest with myself. Without that 2:16, I would have never transformed into the runner I am today. #track #800m #transformation #running #trusttheprocess

800m Final in the 1972 Olympics. Dave Wottle throws down the steadiest 1:45 I've ever seen. What can we learn from this? Well, to do that, we have to think about the context of this race for Mr. Wottle. A few days after the 1972 Olympic Trials, Wottle got married. If you know coaches, especially elite ones, you know that his weren't happy. In fact, Bill Bowerman said he "traded gold for a wife", which really speaks to the confidence Bowerman had in him... What's more, Wottle developed a tendinopathy as soon as he started training after the trials. He had to take 2 weeks off, and never really got his mileage back under him before this race. I think this is the first key point: things are rarely, if ever, going to go your way leading up to a big race. Especially as you age, you are going to have nagging aches and pains, and you'll rarely ever get to the starting line feeling as good as you wanted. The second thing we can learn is that something is better than nothing. Yes, we do detrain fast, but for events like the 800m which are glycolytic in nature, that detraining isn't as severe or as rapid as you might think. Take the classic Holloszy detraining study for example. Most of the changes within the first week were in oxidative enzymes, not glycolytic. Moreover, when any level of exercise is introduced, it delays the rate of detraining, and depending on what you do, can even maintain your level of fitness. Thirdly, live your life. I am guilty of this, but it's so easy to fall into the thought pattern that if I DON'T do everything perfect, then my race is over before it started. That's just not fundamentally true, even at THE highest level. There are so many examples of amazing comebacks or less than ideal wins that dispute this. Stress is as much apart of your physiological adaptation as having a perfect diet. Finally, run your race. This might be the most important. Dave could have easily looked at his position and mailed it in. He trusted his training, made his moves, and stuck with it until the very end. Everyone's different, so find what works for you and go for it. The only way to do that is to race.
