“The number of people who can survive on 5 hours of sleep or less without any impairment, expressed as a percent of the population, and rounded to a whole number, is zero”. Matthew Walker We’ve all heard people say that they can get by on 5-6 hours of sleep, we may even have said it ourselves. Barring some very rare genetic mutations, most people need 7-9 hours of sleep per night to avoid impairment. What that means is that most of us are accumulating sleep debt, losing out on REM sleep and generally feeling crummy. Is it possible to “pay off” sleep debt? Not really. Let’s say you need 7 hours of sleep per night, and you get 5 instead, you’re short 10 hours of sleep by the weekend. If making it up were a purely mathematical proposition, then you’d need to sleep 12 hours per night on Friday and Saturday to get back in the green. Additionally, if you’re in a state of sleep deprivation, even if you succeed in making it up the next day, the clinical effects still last for days. And the more tired we are, the less we are able to identify our own impairment. Finally, sleeping 5 hours or less every night increases the risk of multiple chronic diseases. So what can we do? For smaller amounts of sleep debt, a little extra sleep on the weekends can help. Although it’s not a great idea to sleep more than an hour past your usual wake time, in order to not mess with your circadian rhythm. It’s a better bet to go to sleep earlier in the evening if you’re feeling extra tired. The best thing we can do is practice good sleep hygiene, create a bedtime routine,and have a consistent wake time. I decided to put my phone down for a lot of it because I knew I had to soak it up! The trailblazers in this lifestyle medicine area are growing because the REAL SCIENCE is there. I’d like to mention the incredible work of Dr Heidi Prather of @hspecialsurgery and Dr Devyani Hunt of @wustl_oficial #orthopedic (specifically The Living Well Center) for the astronomical work they have done for pre op pts. Both programs help people safely prep pts for any ortho surgery (think joints/replacements) where they not only reduce hospital stays, decrease infection rate, but they also lose weight, reverse chronic illness, and get them back to moving quickly with off the charts pain levels decreases! How’s that for a couple of great docs at world renowned institutions!
