The Horsehead Nebula - Barnard 33 The Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33) is a small dark nebula located about 1,375 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Orion. The nebula is located just to the south of Alnitak, the easternmost star of Orion’s Belt, and is part of the much larger Orion molecular cloud complex. It appears within the southern region of the dense dust cloud known as Lynds 1630, along the edge of the much larger, active star-forming H II region called IC 434. It is one of the most identifiable nebulae because of its resemblance to a horse’s head or “seahorse”, as my daughter calls it. This was the first time I have imaged this area, in all my years of Astrophotography. This winter has been lousy for imaging in northern Arizona, but over this past new moon I was able to have some luck with this target. Running my Celestron Edge 11” Edge SCT at a very slow native F10 and 2800mm was no easy task, but was blessed with some great data. Imaging Specifications OTA: Celestron Edge 11” Edge SCT Mount: iOptron CEM120 ZWO ASI2600mm Gain: 100 🔴Chroma Red 54 x 180s = 2.7hrs 🟢Chroma Green 50 x 180s = 2.5hrs 🔵Chroma Blue 72 x 180s = 3.6hrs 🟣Chroma 3nm Ha 65 x 300s = 5.4hrs 14.2 hours total Cooling Temperature: -10 degrees celsius Auto-focusing: ZWO EAF Control: ZWO ASIAIR Plus Calibrated and processed in Pixinsight Imaged from Flagstaff, Arizona in class 2 Bortle skies - https://NAZObservatory.com

La cometa C/2024 E1 (Wierzchos) ha raggiunto il perielio il 20 gennaio! Si tratta di una cometa iperbolica non periodica scoperta il 3 marzo 2024 da Kacper Wierzchos. Trattandosi, come detto, di un oggetto non periodico, ha un periodo orbitale molto ampio, dell'ordine di migliaia di anni, e dunque questo è un momento unico per la sua osservazione. Tuttavia siamo sfortunati: la cometa è ottimale per l'osservazione dall'emisfero sud, dove si attesta su una magnitudine attorno a 5-7, rendendola un bersaglio ideale per binocoli o telescopi amatoriali. Ad ogni modo, non è il perielio della cometa E1 la notizia del momento. È stata infatti appena osservata un'altra cometa ancora molto distante dalla Terra, a 300 milioni di km, però gia individuata dagli astronomi perche davvero enorme. Tale oggetto passerà vicinissimo al Sole e ciò causerà un notevole aumento della sua luminosità, per via della elevata sublimazione (ossia di un consistente scioglimento dei ghiacci dovuto a tale vicinanza rispetto alla nostra stella). Tutto ciò non è ancora confermato, l'oggetto è stato appena scoperto e occorrerà seguirlo nei prossimi mesi per ottenere nuovi dati, ma se le cose stanno realmente così diventerebbe, al momento del perielio, visibile ad occhio nudo addirittura di giorno. A memoria, l'ultima cometa effettivamente visibile da tutti, senza neppure l'utilizzo del binocolo, è stata la cometa Hale-Bopp nel 1997, per mesi visibile nel cielo serale. Negli ultimi anni vi sono state altre comete molto brillanti, ma visibili ad occhio nudo solo nei luoghi più bui del pianeta. The Horsehead (IC434) and Flame nebula (NGC2024) in the constellation of Orion. This is a mainly hydrogen star forming region located 1400 light years away. What makes it unique is the dark nebula (B33) in front of the red hydrogen cloud that produces the obvious horse head shape. The dark Horsehead is about 6 light years in diameter, which gives a great sense of the scale in this image. Alnitak is the brightest star in this image and is the leftmost (from northern latitudes) star in Orion’s Belt. The Flame nebula is just below Alnitak which glows partly due to the amazing energy from Alnitak, which is 250,000 times brighter than the Sun. I captured this over 4 nights using my remote telescope in Texas.
