Spoiler alert: I beat my aggressive stage 4 cancer at age 30 & my hair is growing back. But nobody tells you how it feels to lose the physical identity of yourself on top of everything else. I also didn’t realize that most people cut their hair because once the chemo causes it to die, your hair turns to straw and feels SO incredibly heavy, itchy and painful. It comes out in literal clumps and the discomfort makes you want to just cut it and be done. Fck cancer. #ayacancerawareness #chemosideeffects #inflammatorybreastcancer #chemohair

This week is Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Awareness Week and so I want to share the things that are NON NEGOTIABLE FOR ME when it comes to taking care of young patients with cancer. 1. Your life does not go on pause just because you have cancer You still have a career, relationships, plans, things you were building toward. I’m not going to pretend those don’t matter while we’re talking about treatment. 2. We talk about fertility. Every time. Even when it’s uncomfortable. Even when timing is tight. Even when the answer isn’t straightforward. Even when we don’t know what the future holds. You deserve to know your options BEFORE we start. 3. You actually understand what’s happening Not just sitting there nodding while I talk. I mean really understanding your diagnosis, your options, and what we’re trying to do. This is too big to feel confused about. 4. Quality of life is not an afterthought You’re not just trying to “get through” treatment. How you feel during it matters, and so does what your life looks like after. 5. We don’t go rouge and treat you “more aggressively” JUST because you’re young This one comes up a lot. There’s this instinct to throw everything at it because “you can handle it.” But more treatment is not always better treatment and that is supported by data! We can’t be treating fear with extra chemotherapy, I’ve seen too many patients harmed that way. Taking care of young patients just feels different. Either way, I don’t think we should be practicing oncology the exact same way in this group and calling it good enough.

Here I cover some of the available fertility preservation techniques after a cancer diagnosis. @ascocancer This guideline has reviewed the data for all these methods, so check it out for more information. Couldn’t fit it all in one video, so next up is part 3 with more options and and what I do in my clinic. #breastcancer #fertility #cancer #ayacancerawareness

Stepping foot on the 4th floor of the hospital where I went from being incredibly healthy, to one high stress level away from death was harder on me mentally than I thought it would be. I was only there for a port flush, but this required me to enter the infusion center. Press the button…glass doors open, all eyes turn to see. Defeat, exhaustion and sadness behind the eyes of each woman waiting for her name to be called back and hope painted on the faces of their caregivers…The patients waiting, eager to know why such a young woman is in the infusion center. Filling my paperwork out only to look up and see the oldest lady in the room next to me wearing the words “cancer sucks” across her breasts. Thoughts can’t help but to flood my brain, is this her first time here? Is this a second or third recurrence? What stage breast cancer does she have? A cold medical bracelet wraps around my wrist..”Name and date of birth? ..11/13/1989. The shifting of bodies in their chairs in the silent room as they hear my birth year out loud…no need to look around, I can feel the soul piercing stares from here. I take a seat and try to keep my mind busy. A few moments later, the door opens, “Kayla?” Deep breath. Walking into the cold infusion center, cubicles full of women battling cancer…the noises of infusion machines constantly beeping, toxic medicine being hung, latex gloves being pulled off and biohazard bins opening filled my ears. The sight of women shuffling to the restroom with their IV poles in hand, volunteers handing out snacks and nurses delivering warm blankets to those that are icing their hands and feet brought tears to my eyes. The suffocating presence of trauma that I’ve buried down crept up from my abdomen, into my chest and had my throat in its grip. “Do you have lidocaine on your port?” No ma’am, just go ahead. The minor sting of the needle entering my skin, the sight of my blood return, the metallic taste as she flushes my port..please just give me the bandaid and send me on my way. I couldn’t exit that building fast enough. When the sunshine hit my face as I stepped outside, I finally felt like I could breathe. Processing trauma is hard 🫶🏻

I know that the transition from patient to survivorship is so tough. 5 years ago I was right where you are - feeling lost and isolated after treatment, still dealing with physical side effects from treatment, terrified of recurrence and angry & frustrated that my body betrayed me. But I promise it gets better with time AND with a little extra effort and love toward your mind & body. After cancer, our bodies and minds need some extra attention because they are so different now. Cancer is an extremely traumatic experience and our bodies hold on to that in different ways. We have to help our bodies and minds heal from everything we went through. What helped me and so many of my clients is focusing on nutrition, movement and mindfulness after treatment. Treating your body with all the love it deserves rather than beating yourself up for what has happened is easier said than done, but truly the key to making survivorship more doable. If you’re interested in what this could look like for you let’s chat! My next round of Mindfully Thrive After Cancer, my 10 week group program for cancer survivors starts the week of April 22nd. Send me a DM for more info or head to the link in bio! #cancersucks #cancersurvivor #cancersurvivorship #ayacancer #ayacancerawareness #lymphoma #hodgkinslymphoma #lymphomasurvivor
