WHThere are a few things people say to me as a disabled person that I know are meant with good intentions, but they don’t always land that way 🤷🏽♀️♿️
“I don’t see you as being Disabled.” 👀
“You don’t look Disabled.” 🤨
“At least it’s not xyz condition…” 😟
I get that most of the time there’s no bad intention behind them. But comments like these can erase real experiences, question invisible disabilities, or minimise what someone’s actually dealing with.
This isn’t about blaming anyone and it’s fine if you’ve said these things before, it’s just about awareness to be more mindful at times! Sometimes what sounds polite on the surface can feel very different on the receiving end, but of course, it’s different for everyone!

WARight… let’s talk about yesterday 🙄🐾
Dad gets on the bus at Hanley and tells the driver where we’re going — Lysander Road .
Now normally… I’ve got this.
Golden guardian mode ON. 💅🐾
But there’s a screen between them.
And that screen? It blocks sound.
Dad’s asking, trying to hear… and I’m stood there thinking,
“Here we go… this is about to go sideways.” 😅
Because if they’d both heard each other properly…
He’d have been told he was on the wrong bus.
Instead… off we go. Wrong direction. Brilliant 🙃
Thankfully it wasn’t miles out of the way…
but it could’ve been.

If someone says they can’t hear you — don’t just repeat it the same way.
Speak up. Make sure they understand.
Because when my human misses one sentence…
I end up doing extra steps I didn’t sign up for 😤🐾
And trust me… I keep count. 👀

THI experienced something deeply troubling while departing Lagos, Nigeria with Delta Airlines
My flight was originally scheduled for March 1 but was postponed to March 2. When we arrived at the airport, there was confusion and chaos, and passengers were even told they were not on the flight despite having confirmed tickets.
But the most disturbing part of the experience was what happened to passengers with disabilities.
There were no elevators available to take us to the departure hall. As a person with a disability, I was forced to climb steep stairs while being physically supported by airport staff. It was unsafe and humiliating.
When we finally reached the aircraft, there were approximately 25 more stairs to board the plane.
There was no wheelchair lift or accessibility support.
I watched wheelchair users struggle to climb those stairs.
The elderly, people with disability were taken up the plane, with no guarantee for their safety.
When I spoke up as a disability advocate and began documenting the situation, Delta staff told me I would not be allowed to travel unless I deleted the videos. It was traumatizing, i have been in shock, since I got home.
Another passenger with Cerebral Palsy and I were told clearly: if we could not climb the stairs, we could not board the aircraft.
This is unacceptable.
Air travel must be accessible and dignified for passengers with disabilities.I feel so disrespected and violated. They forced me to delete evidence. As a lawyer, I knew that was not right, I was afraid of what they may do to me.
Delta Airlines has no respect for Nigerians in general. However, my focus here is on people with disabilities.
I am calling on Delta Airlines and the aviation authorities in Nigeria to address this issue and ensure accessibility standards are respected.
