During the fast‑spreading Eaton Fire in January 2025, which burned over 14,000 acres in Los Angeles County and forced massive evacuations across Altadena and surrounding areas, two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies were conducting door‑to‑door checks at a senior living facility that was supposed to have been cleared. Amid thick smoke and encroaching flames, Deputies Nicholas Martinez and Quinn Alkonis found a 100‑year‑old woman who had been left behind and was unable to find her way out as the blaze approached her building. Body‑camera footage released by the department showed them guiding her to safety, with the woman pleading “Don’t lose me,” and the deputies assuring her they would get her out. The video of the rescue quickly drew attention and sparked scrutiny of evacuation procedures, as officials and residents questioned how the centenarian came to be overlooked during the frantic evacuation of MonteCedro Retirement Community. The incident led to a state investigation and highlighted gaps in emergency planning and ex*cution at some long‑term care facilities during the wildfire crisis.

At approximately 1:03am on March 24th, 2026, Orange County Fire Authority crews responded to reports of a structure fire at a home on Marshall Lane in Tustin after neighbors reported hearing glass breaking. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the garage area of the residence. The incident was quickly upgraded to a second alarm as crews worked to contain the fire. A resident from the home was transported by ambulance to a local hospital in unknown condition. Authorities stated it was believed no other occupants were inside the residence at the time of the fire. Approximately 30 minutes into the incident, the roof of the home collapsed as firefighters continued their efforts. It took more than an hour for crews to bring the main body of the fire under control.
