Today is the last day of #autismacceptancemonth so I figured I should at least post something to celebrate! 🎉 I got diagnosed as AuDHD (Autistic + ADHD) at age 30, and as a non-white, multi-racial woman of color, that is a *HUGE* privilege that I recognize and do not take for granted. It took several years, thousands of dollars, a crap-ton of self advocating and two different assessments for me to get my official diagnosis. Accessing Autism assessments in the U.S. and finding physicians who don’t hold hardened biases is extremely difficult for adults, especially for women and people of color. Up until recent years, Autism research mainly focused on young, white boys, and thats one reason why you are seeing more women and adults getting diagnosed—not because there are “more” Autistic people in existence, but because the full spectrum of Autistic traits and how masking (or camouflaging) plays a role in how Autism is perceived by those who evaluate people for it, are being recognized. If you’d like me to share more about my experience in the diagnostic process, comment and let me know! ‼️ Note: Keep in mind the length of this video only allowed for three of my MANY Autistic traits and that Autistic people are not a monolith. Our experiences and struggles as Autistics are valid whether you believe they are or not. Just because we do not present the same way your child, or nephew, or student, or whoever—does not invalidate us. “Invisible” disabilities are valid. While my struggles as an Autistic person may be invisible to you, I promise you they are not to me or the people closest to me. #actuallyautistic #autistic #autisticadult #blackautistic #audhd

Only 6% of autism research focuses on profound autism — the very group this diagnosis was originally built around. This was the original autism — children who lost speech, regressed, struggled medically, and needed lifelong support. Over time, the narrative got hijacked. Many began to advocate based on feeling offended over symbols, terms, labels and emotions causing the subgroup that undeniably requires more clinical research, support, attention, care and help behind. Awareness shifted toward those who can speak for themselves — while the ones in pain, nonspeaking, and medically complex were quietly left behind. And while every voice on the spectrum matters… not every conversation about profound autism needs to center those with fewer challenges. Sometimes, it’s not about you — and THAT’S OKAY. Because the ones who can’t speak are counting on those who can. We can hold compassion for all — while still shining a brighter light on the most impacted. Only 6% of research represents them. Let’s bring MORE focus to the children and families who were never meant to be forgotten. Credits to: @profoundautism #profoundautism #severeautism #level3autism #nonspeakingautism #disability

Uta, my exhaustion isn't a "development." It’s my reality. I’m reading these headlines, and honestly, it’s hard not to feel the erasure. Uta Frith, one of the "pioneers" of autism research, is calling the rise in diagnoses a "dangerous development". She wants to shrink the spectrum and limit the label to children diagnosed before age five, claiming that the late-diagnosed population is simply "different". She says masking "has no scientific basis" because she can't find a way to "falsify" it in a lab. As an autistic teacher, the Lived Bridge, I’m telling you what’s actually dangerous: telling an entire generation of neurodivergent people that their struggle isn't "authentic" enough to count. She calls our exhaustion a "subjective report". I call it a physiological debt we pay every single day for trying to survive in a world that wasn't built for us. She’s even "skeptical" of ear defenders because there isn't enough research to prove they "improve lives". We don’t need a lab study to prove that sensory safety is a human right. We don't need a "biomarker" to earn the right to be understood. We aren't "collapsing the spectrum". We are finally refusing to be invisible. Don't let a "primitive" clinical definition tell you what you or your child needs. You are the expert on your life. Your child is the expert on theirs. Connection > correction. Every time. If your lived experience is more real than her "primitive" science, drop a ✊. Let's show her we’re still here. #neuroaffirming #autisticteacher #livedbridge
