Among the unbelievable oddities at Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, our two-headed calves stop visitors in their tracks more than most. These rare animals are known as polycephalic, from the Greek words poly meaning “many” and kephalē meaning “head.”
Because polycephalic animals often share organs and must coordinate movement between two brains, survival is usually very difficult. But sometimes nature surprises us. In the 1990s, a two-headed cow named Gemini lived nearly 18 months, defying the odds and earning a place in oddity history.
