🙅🏽‍♀️ TRYING TO BE PERFECT IS RUINING YOUR LIFE This has been sitting in my drafts for months. “It’s just a backhandspring” “You form isn’t even that great in slow motion” “How does this provide any value to your followers?” It provides value because while this skill isn’t challenging for me to do, there are so many things I see that could be improved and *should* be improved with the practice I’ve had. Just like anything we do in life… We’re good at living, but there are so many things we aspire to improve - our health, our social life, our salaries, our living situation, our family life, etc. It’s about meeting yourself where you’re at and enjoying the ride. How boring would it be to be perfect at everything so you had nothing to work for? Be proud of where you’re at, how far you’ve come, what you can still do, what you have, who’s in your life, what you’re capable of and see how your life starts to shift. And make sure you’re not surrounding yourself with people who make you feel less than, because I can say from experience, it feels like hell. 👉 What are you still working on in this moment? Backward skills, such as back handsprings, are often one of the first times athletes move without seeing where they’re going. The lack of visibility requires a lot of trust and faith that nothing bad is going to happen. This naturally increases fear and anxiety when doing the skill.😬 To work through a BHS mental block: ⭐️Understand why backward skills feel harder. The inability to see where you’re going requires significant trust, which is why fear and anxiety are more common with backward tumbling skills. ⭐️Release perfectionism. Believing there is only one perfect way to attempt the skill while learning creates unnecessary pressure and makes it feel unsafe. ⭐️Break it into manageable pieces. Instead of focusing on the entire skill, focus on a specific component of it to reduce overwhelm. ⭐️Focus on helpful physical actions, like “reach through my shoulders.” Thinking about not falling or messing up isn’t helpful and increases fear. ⭐️Use progressions and drills. For example, doing it from a cheese mat into a pit allows athletes to practice on a soft, inclined surface to build trust and safety. ⭐️Be patient with the process. Mastering each component helps confidence grow, while rushing often leads to increased anxiety.
