When this spotted hyena crashed our dinner, two different survival instincts kicked in: 1️⃣ The Pro Guide: He immediately goes into "De-escalation Mode." By lowering his head and breaking eye contact, he signals: "I am not a challenger." 2️⃣ The Photographer: My job is to fight every biological urge to run. If I flinch, I may trigger a chase. If I shake, I lose the shot. 3 mistakes photographers make… and trust me, I’ve been guilty of all of them. 😅 After almost 15 years behind the camera and 10 years running my photography business, these are a few of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way. If you’re a newer photographer (or even a seasoned one), these small shifts can make a huge difference in your work and your client experience. 1️⃣ Not helping clients with styling. Styling can truly make or break a session. I always provide my clients with styling advice, mood boards, and a full style guide before we ever step in front of the camera. This helps outfits photograph beautifully with my editing style and ensures everyone feels confident and comfortable. When colors, textures, and patterns work together, the photos instantly feel more polished and timeless. 2️⃣ Not scouting the location beforehand. Even if I’ve photographed somewhere a hundred times, I always arrive 15–30 minutes early. Light changes, foliage shifts, and the landscape can look completely different from day to day. Taking a few minutes to walk the area and see what the location is offering that day can completely transform how a session flows and how the images turn out. 3️⃣ Thinking you need the newest gear. So many photographers stress about having the newest camera or lens. While gear can matter eventually, it’s not what creates great art in the beginning. Your eye, your creativity, and the way you connect with people matters so much more. I’ve seen stunning images created on an iPhone and edited on an iPad. You don’t need thousands of dollars in gear to start — you just need to believe in your vision. We’re all learning as we go… and sometimes the “mistakes” are the best teachers. 🤍 #photographytips #photographymentor #photographyeducation #familyphotographer #behindthelens

The set up vs the shots 📸 Over the summer I was sent the Osmo Pocket 3 to test while travelling, and it quickly became one of those bits of kit I want to test in every environment. After such a successful trip, I could not wait to get back home and see how it would work in a more adventurous setting, so naturally it ended up on the Jeep. I hard mounted it and had far too much fun suction cupping it to almost every flat surface I could find. Doors, bonnet, windows, mirrors… you name it. My favourite position was mounting it on the roof and pointing it down into the car, which gave such a unique behind the scenes perspective of the drive. The built in gimbal is seriously impressive and smooths out all the bumps, making everything feel cinematic even on rough roads. It still surprises me how stable the footage looks when the car is moving. Being able to see the framing live from inside the car via the DJI Mimo app made the whole process even more enjoyable, and meant I could tweak angles on the go without stopping.
